China rules out Sino-Japanese summit: state media

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China has ruled out the possibility of a proposed summit meeting with Japan, the official China Daily reported on Tuesday, after Tokyo proposed the meeting in a bid to defuse a territorial row.

The report, quoting a statement by an unidentified Chinese official made on Monday, comes during a visit by Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Akitaka Saiki.

Saiki's visit is the latest in a series of efforts by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to improve relations soured by the bitter row over uninhabited islands claimed by both countries.

The hawkish Abe, who cemented his grip on power in an election last week, has been signaling a desire for dialogue with China - even though Japan has raised its assessment of the risk of China's military buildup and maritime assertiveness.

The unidentified Chinese official urged the Japanese government to take concrete measures to improve strained ties rather than "empty slogans", the China Daily report said.

It also said statements by Abe adviser Isao Iijima that a summit between Abe and President Xi Jinping could occur in the "not-too-distant future", based on conversations with Chinese officials in Beijing in mid-July, were misleading.

A Japanese foreign ministry source in Tokyo said he had not seen the China Daily report and could not comment on it directly, but said it was still possible a summit could be held "at an appropriate time".

"It is true no concrete date is set for a leaders' summit or foreign ministers' summit," the Japanese source said. "But this does not mean there will never be one in the future."

China's foreign ministry also said in a statement on its website on Monday that Iijima had not met any Chinese government officials recently, contrary to reports on Sunday.

The China Daily quoted the unidentified Chinese official as saying: "What Iijima told reporters on Sunday is not true and is fabricated, based on the needs of Japan's domestic politics."

Friction between China and Japan over the disputed islands has intensified in recent years. The election of Abe, perceived as reorienting Japan towards a confrontational posture in regard to Beijing, was not welcomed by the Chinese government.

Abe is also perceived in China as being insufficiently or insincerely apologetic for Japan's past militarism.

Foreign critics have also accused the Chinese Communist Party of manipulating domestic opinion through anti-Japanese propaganda and film to buttress its own legitimacy.

The China Daily is an English language publication put out by the Chinese government for foreign consumption.

Mongolia to Mexico: Edinburgh's military tattoo ready to roll

EDINBURGH | Mon Jul 29, 2013 1:38pm EDT

EDINBURGH (Reuters) - A Mongolian "throat singer", Mexican dancers and a native New Zealand Maori "war dance" will join bagpipers and martial bands from around the world at Edinburgh's Royal Military Tattoo when it opens on Friday for its annual three-week run.

The Tattoo, a 90-minute cavalcade of military bands, bagpipers, drummers, dancers and other performances set against the brooding backdrop of Edinburgh castle, is one of the great military spectacles in the world and draws thousands of visitors to the Scottish capital during the month of August.

Tattoo Director Brigadier David Allfrey said some 220,000 spectators were expected to fill the bleachers around the esplanade of the castle atop the ancient volcano which towers over the city.

"The show contains over 80 different musical numbers and we have some remarkable acts both from the United Kingdom and further afield," Allfrey said at the program launch on Monday, adding that over 95 percent of tickets had already been sold.

The central band of the Mongolian Armed Forces is making its debut, including a "throat singer".

Throat singing involves simultaneously vocalizing one or more notes over a fundamental pitch, producing a distinct sound that can take years to attain. It is traditionally done by horse herders on the Mongolian steppes, where the music can carry great distances.

From the other side of the world, 110 musicians, singers and dancers will provide "the thumping Latino spirit" of Mexico.

The New Zealand Army band includes a Haka war dance in its repertoire, while the traditional band and dancers of the South Korean defense ministry, the pipes of the Royal Guard of Oman and the Wallace pipes and drums from the Mediterranean island of Malta will also add to the extravaganza.

At the heart of the tattoo are the massed pipes and drums and bands of Britain's own regiments, with a swirl of color and spine tingling music. About 1,000 performers take part in the tattoo as fighter jets streak across the sky above the castle for an event which was first staged in 1950.

To round off each night, a lone piper high on the castle ramparts, playing the Scottish soldier's traditional call to end of the day, will this year perform the specially written "Reflections of Panmunjom" to mark the 60th anniversary of the armistice signed at Panmunjom to halt the 1950-53 Korean war.

India win U-16 SAFF championship

Birthday boy, Jerry Lalrinzuala?s spectacular long range goal helped India beat Nepal 1-0 to win the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Under-16 Championships held at the Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu on Tuesday. This is the first time that India have won the championship.

Lalrinzuala unleashed a powerful left?footed, 35?yard strike to beat the Nepalese goalkeeper in the 18th minute. The goal proved to be the difference between both the teams.

An ecstatic coach of the Indian contingent, Gautam Ghosh, told dna after the win, ?I am very proud as this is the first time we have won such a big tournament. I am thrilled that all our efforts and training have not gone to waste. All credit goes to the boys, whose hunger and determination for victory gave us this title.?

However, the coach added he is not satisfied with just this win. ?Our main aim is to be able to compete with top European sides like Italy and Spain, only then will we realise where we stand in world football,? he said.

Optimistic about the growth of Indian football, Ghosh said, ?with the many youth training programmes that the AIFF is having, and with the importance being given to youth development, we should have a good national team in the next 5-7 years.?

The next goal for the team is to win the qualifiers for the 2014 AFC U- 16 Championships in Thailand. The qualifiers will be held in Kuwait. Talking about India?s chances in hosting the U-17 World Cup, Ghosh added ?2017 is far away and we need to improve our infrastructure first.?

Nexus 7 review (2013)

Who knew affordable tablets could be so good? That was our reaction after reviewing the original Nexus 7 when it went on sale last year for $200; at the time, comparably specced products were going for at least $100 more. So, when this year's follow-up came out at a slightly higher price ($229 and up), we were a little concerned the higher cost would dissuade penny-pinching shoppers from taking the plunge. The Nexus 7 (2013) is definitely the best bang for your buck, and is still affordable enough for most budget-savvy shoppers. Read on for more.

La. city police arrested men under sodomy law

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) ? An East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office task force arrested at least 12 men since 2011 under a sodomy law invalidated a decade ago the U.S. Supreme Court, a newspaper reported Sunday.

The most recent arrest was July 18 when a man discussed or agreed to have sex with a male undercover agent, The Advocate (http://bit.ly/13mSpdc) reported. The task force was trying to deter sexual activities at the parish's public parks.

Although sex in public and sex solicitation for money are illegal in Louisiana, neither was part of these 12 cases, and most of the men were arrested after agreeing to have sex away from the park at a private residence, District Attorney Hillar Moore III told the newspaper.

"The sheriff's office's intentions are all good," Moore said. "But from what I've seen of these cases, legally, we found no criminal violation."

The Supreme Court ruled in 2003 that a Texas law against oral or anal sex was invalid. Louisiana was among nine states with such laws. Richard Leyoub, then attorney general, said the high court's ruling made Louisiana's law unenforceable.

The sheriff's office sent a statement Sunday to the newspaper saying it "should have taken a different approach" to worries about park safety, the newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/14pLnEv ).

"We will consult with others in the legislative and judicial branches to see what can be done to remove this law from the criminal code that each deputy receives and to also find alternative ways to deter sexual and lewd activity from our parks," it said.

Metro Councilman John Delgado said Sheriff Sid Gautreaux owed an apology to the men arrested and the entire parish.

Delgado said he will file public records requests to determine when the district attorney's office told the sheriff's office that the men targeted had committed no crime.

"You cannot simply hide behind not knowing that the law had been changed by the U.S. Supreme Court decision in 2003," Delgado said in email to the sheriff's office. "The sheriff's actions are a violation of the civil rights of these men under the 5th and 14th Amendments. Ignorance of the law is no excuse ... Doesn't your office tell people that all the time?"

Should You Finance a Car or Pay Cash? - AutoFoundry

Whether to finance a car or always pay cash is an age-old question. Today, more than 70% of consumers finance their vehicles. They choose to do so because they either a) don?t have the cash to purchase a vehicle outright, or b) would rather keep the cash they have in savings, and spend more in the long run for the convenience of monthly payments. If you can pay cash for your next car, you have to ask yourself if you should. There are good points on both sides, so let?s look at them so that you can make an informed decision.

Cash

The cash-only pundits point out that paying cash saves you money. That savings comes from the interest that you do not have to pay on a loan. Here are other pros of paying with cash.

  • No monthly payment.
  • Only need liability insurance, which saves you money.
  • Possible to negotiate a lower price when paying cash (this depends on your haggling skills).
  • No worries about repossession if you lose you job.

Financing

The main pro of financing a vehicle is in the boost to your credit score you receive when you make your payments on time. Since FICO bases 35 percent of your credit score on payment history and another 10 percent on the types of credit that you use, a car loan can address a total of 45 percent of your credit score. That means that you can cause your score to jump greatly with one loan. Of course, that jump only occurs if you make on-time payments?at least twelve of them, preferably 18. You will find it extremely difficult to obtain a mortgage if you have never had an auto loan and at least one credit card, both with solid payment histories.

Another reason that people opt for financing is to keep their cash in savings. This does not save you money, because chances are you will pay more in total interest than you earn in interest from a CD or savings account. However, some people are simply more comfortable keeping their cash in reserves, and they are willing to pay a premium for this convenience. If you have great credit, then your interest rate might be so low that this won?t be as much of a concern. However, if your credit is less than prime, then financing a car could cost you thousands more than buying it with cash.

Oil Column: China worries continue to weigh despite supply disruption elsewhere

The oil market is currently short of around 0.5mln barrels of its usual supply, according to reports.

Disrupted exports from a number of countries have contributed to this shortfall, meanwhile US consumption, the world?s largest oil user, has been notably higher throughout July with America?s stockpiles thought to be around 30mln barrels lighter than a month ago.

Libya, Iraq and the North Sea are among the affected territories which have had either no or limited shipments of oil exported. And it is predicted that the constraints may continue a while longer.

Crude prices have yet to really take off, however, and given the lingering concerns over the level of economic growth ? and therefore oil demand ? in China experts aren?t expecting to see too much of a response in? the market from these supply constraints.?

In London trading Brent Crude futures were up 43 cents to US$107.64 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediary futures changed hands just 17 cents higher at US$104.88.

Israeli-Palestinian peace talks to resume after three years

By Arshad Mohammed and Ori Lewis

WASHINGTON/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel and the Palestinians plan to resume peace negotiations this week for the first time in nearly three years after an intense effort by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to bring them back to the table.

The talks are scheduled to resume in Washington on Monday evening and on Tuesday and will be conducted by senior aides to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the State Department said.

"Both leaders have demonstrated a willingness to make difficult decisions that have been instrumental in getting to this point. We are grateful for their leadership," Kerry said in a statement.

Middle East analysts voiced skepticism that the talks might lead to a peace treaty to end the more than six-decade conflict that has defied two decades of U.S. efforts to broker a solution.

Still, the resumption of negotiations is a rare moment of good news in the Middle East for the Obama administration, which has struggled to formulate a policy to try to end the civil war in Syria or to facilitate a democratic transition in Egypt.

Even getting the Israelis and the Palestinians to agree to resume talks required great effort by Kerry, who made six peace-making trips to the region in the last four months - an unusual amount of time - to coax them back.

The last piece of the puzzle came together when the Israeli Cabinet on Sunday approved the release of 104 Palestinian prisoners, with 13 ministers voting for the release, seven against and two abstaining, an Israeli official said.

OBAMA'S INVOLVEMENT NEEDED?

The last round of direct negotiations broke down in late 2010 in a dispute over Jewish settlement construction in the West Bank, land that Israel seized in a 1967 war, along with the Gaza Strip, which the Palestinians want for a state.

It is unclear how the United States hopes to bridge the core issues in the dispute, including borders, the future of Jewish settlements on the West Bank, the fate of Palestinian refugees and the status of Jerusalem.

While commending Kerry for his determination, Shibley Telhami, Anwar Sadat Professor for Peace and Development at the University of Maryland, said President Barack Obama would have to get involved if the talks were ultimately to succeed and the United States would have to offer its own ideas for a solution.

"At some point, the central player in this saga is not going to be Netanyahu, it's not going to be Abu Mazen (Abbas), it's not going to be John Kerry, it's going to be Barack Obama," he said. "So far, it's not clear that ... the president is prepared to take the kind of risk that would move this forward."

In a statement, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said initial talks were planned for Monday evening - Israeli media said these would take place over dinner at Kerry's home - and on Tuesday.

Psaki suggested the round of talks in Washington would be to chart a path forward, rather than to leap directly into the thorny issues that need to be resolved.

After his latest round of shuttle diplomacy, Kerry announced on July 19 in Amman, Jordan, that the parties had laid the ground to resume negotiations on the so-called "final status" issues that must be resolved to end the dispute.

"The meetings in Washington will mark the beginning of these talks," Psaki said. "They will serve as an opportunity to develop a procedural work plan for how the parties can proceed with the negotiations in the coming months."

PRISONER DEAL

Earlier on Sunday, Netanyahu had urged divided rightists in his Cabinet to back the prisoner deal.

"This moment is not easy for me, is not easy for the Cabinet ministers, and is not easy especially for the bereaved families, whose feelings I understand," he said when the Cabinet met, referring to families who have lost members in militant attacks.

"But there are moments in which tough decisions must be made for the good of the nation and this is one of those moments."

Israeli Channel 1 television said prisoners would be released in three stages, depending on progress in the talks, with a group of Israeli citizens left until the last stage.

Abbas has demanded the release of prisoners held since before a 1993 interim peace accord took effect. Israel has jailed thousands more Palestinians since then, many for carrying out deadly attacks.

The prisoner release would allow Netanyahu to sidestep other Palestinian demands, such as a halt to Jewish settlement expansion and a guarantee that negotiations over borders will be based on boundaries from before the 1967 Middle East war, when Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem.

Hundreds of protesters from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) staged a rally against the resumption of peace talks, clashing with police in the West Bank city of Ramallah, the seat of Abbas's Palestinian Authority.

PFLP activists also demonstrated in Gaza and chanted: "Listen Abbas, our land is not for sale. ... The (Palestinian) cause will never be resolved except by the rifle."

Aaron David Miller, a former U.S. peace negotiator who works for the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars think tank in Washington, said he was impressed by Kerry's tenacity.

"He has invested so much in this now, and even through expectations are so low, he is in an investment trap, he really can't let it fail now," Miller said. "Which means he'll have to go to extreme lengths to keep this thing afloat."

Google to Glass Developers: start making Android apps

Google to Glass Developers: start making Android apps

Google seems to be preparing to put Google Glass app development into high gear, encouraging developers to start making Android apps for it. Glass team member Alain Vongsouvanh made the call, perhaps in anticipation of the imminent release of the Glass Development Kit (GDK).

Google-Glass1

Announced at Google I/O earlier this year, the GDK will allow developers to build Google Glass applications or ?Glassware? in the form of an APK that can be installed and run directly on the device. At the moment, Glass developers only have access to a web-based service with a limited set of APIs that allows access to the hardware. Google has not made any announcement as to exactly when the GDK will be made available.

In the meantime, Vongsouvanh recommends preparing for its arrival by developing Glassware using the regular Android SDK with API level 15 (corresponding to Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich). Since Glass will be running Android 4.0.4, the Android SDK already provides developers with the API to access hardware such as an accelerometer and features like media playback and Android widgets. Using the existing SDK will also allow beginners to get familiar with Android development before jumping into developing Glassware.

The Glass team has also provided some APK samples to help developers get started. These include a stopwatch, a compass, and a level, with more examples coming in the weeks ahead. Vongsouvanh also promised to update these examples in order to demonstrate how to smoothly transition from a regular Android app to a Google Glass app once the GDK has been released.

Heavy rains flood homes, roads in North Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? A system of thunderstorms across western North Carolina stalled on Saturday and dumped about a foot of rain on the area, causing power outages and flash floods that swamped homes and washed out roads and bridges.

There were 18 reports of swift-water rescues, and one minor injury, said Jim Dickerson, spokesman for Catawba County Emergency Services. He did not have details.

Hickory Mayor Rudy Wright urged residents to stay indoors and away from flooded roads, The Charlotte Observer reported (http://bit.ly/1buP7OY).

"This is a time for all of us to be very careful and patient," he said. "The cleanup is going to take a while."

Parts of Catawba and surrounding counties were under water Saturday. Catawba County officials said some of the worst flash flooding in decades followed a nearly stationary weather system that dumped 10 inches of rain in about six hours.

Officials closed 65 roads in Catawba County by Saturday afternoon. At least six will remain closed for up to three months to repair damage, Dickerson said.

A full damage assessment will begin Sunday, he said.

High Shoals Lake in Catawba County rose nearly five feet over a 10-hour span. Officials said high water will move down the Catawba River later Saturday, possibly causing more flooding. The rain had stopped in the area by late afternoon Saturday. The National Weather Service said the heavy rain will move east across the western piedmont of North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina.

Several miles of Interstate 85 in Cabarrus County was closed for a short time due to high water. Traffic moved at a crawl along both I-85 and Interstate 77 north of Charlotte as drivers navigated water several inches deep in spots. In Lincoln County, there were reports of up to three feet of water covering roads.

Duke Energy reported about 5,000 power outages.

It is at least the fourth major flash flooding event in the Charlotte region in the past month. Highway officials already are working to repair more than a dozen Charlotte-area roads damaged by previous flooding.

Suspect accused of assaulting bus driver

Two city bus passengers helped police catch a man accused of spitting on a bus driver and clobbering him with a rock Sunday afternoon, Albuquerque police said.

About 1:30 p.m., bus driver Robert Gallegos was driving a bus north of Montgomery on San Mateo when 37-year-old Michael Fisher got on the bus, spat in Gallegos? face and whacked him with a large rock, causing a head injury, according to Albuquerque Police Department spokesman Simon Drobik. Gallegos was taken to Presbyterian Hospital for observation and required either stitches or staples for a wound that drew blood, he said.

Carl Ray, 56, and Sean Adams, 37, were on the bus and saw the incident. They followed the attacker and detained him until police arrived, Drobik said.

Fisher was booked on charges of aggravated battery and held at the Metropolitan Detention Center, Drobik said in a statement.

Drobik said that Fisher?s wife had been asked by Gallegos to disembark from the bus in the recent past, and that Fisher had boarded the bus with the intention of striking Gallegos in retaliation.

?It was definitely not random,? Drobik said.

Agencies, adult clubs discuss sex trafficking

Joining a shift among law enforcement agencies across the country, a group of New Mexico sheriffs, federal agents and a dozen Texas state troopers met with adult club owners in Albuquerque last week to discuss ways to battle sex trafficking.

The meeting and workshops sponsored by U.S. Homeland Security Investigations were part of a broader effort to get adult industry officials and law enforcement agencies together on new initiatives aimed at tackling sex trafficking in areas around the country.

Kevin Abar, assistant special agent in charge of Home Security Investigations in New Mexico, said the purpose of the workshops is to help adult club owners look for signs of sex trafficking and to educate investigators on how club owners operate businesses.

According to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center, sex trafficking involves prostitution and other adult services that are induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person is under 18 years old.

Brandt Snedeker wins Canadian Open

OAKVILLE, Ontario (AP) ? Zoe Olivia Mahan can expect something special from Brandt Snedeker.

Snedeker won the Canadian Open on Sunday, a day after Hunter Mahan withdrew with the lead before the third round when his wife went into labor. Kandi Mahan gave birth to daughter Zoe Olivia early Sunday in Texas.

"Zoe will be getting a very nice baby gift from me," Snedeker said. "I can't thank Kandi enough for going into labor early. I don't know if I'd be sitting here if she hadn't. But that is a way more important thing than a golf tournament. I missed a golf tournament when my first was born, and it was the best decision I ever made. I'm sure Hunter would say the same thing."

Snedeker closed with 2-under 70 for a three-stroke victory.

"Just ecstatic right now," Snedeker said. "This is a tournament I said early on in my career I wanted to win just because my caddie (Scott Vail) is actually from Canada and it's his national open. It meant a lot to him, meant a lot to me. Third-oldest tournament on tour and it's got some great history to it, and now to put my name on that trophy it means a lot."

Snedeker finished at 16-under 272. The six-time PGA Tour winner also won the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in February.

"It feels great to get a win," Snedeker said. "To validate all the hard work I've put in over the past three months where I haven't played my best and know that I'm working on the right stuff and able to hold up under some pretty serious pressure this afternoon. To win a tournament like this with those pivotal holes coming down the stretch means a lot."

Snedeker had two birdies and a bogey on the front nine. He birdied the par-4 10th to move to 16 under, but gave the shot back on the par-3 12th. He birdied the par-5 16th and parred the final two holes.

"I hung in there really well and made the key putts I needed to and I was able to survive," Snedeker said. "That's what today is all about."

Dustin Johnson, William McGirt, Matt Kuchar and Jason Bohn tied for second.

Johnson was tied for the lead after a birdie on No. 16, then drove out of bounds and hit the lip of a fairway bunker en route to a triple-bogey 7 on the par-4 17th. He finished with a 70.

"I was playing really well," Johnson said. "Really confident, swinging the driver really good. So you know, it's a driver hole for me, and I just blocked it a little bit. Made a poor swing. ... Not too happy, but I felt really good with my golf game. ... It's nothing, nothing to worry about. I'll go get them next weekend."

McGirt had a 68, and Kuchar and Bohn shot 71.

David Hearn was the top Canadian, shooting a 73 to tie for 44th at 4 under.

"It wasn't the finish that I was really looking for. I had a nice chance today," said Hearn, a playoff loser in the John Deere Classic. "I'll take away some positives from the week. I appreciate the support from everyone here this week and it always feels good to play at home."

Mike Weir tied for 49th at 3 under after a 72.

"I'm playing fine. Just missing too many short putts," Weir said. "I missed a number the last couple days inside 6, 7 feet, just missing way too many of those. You need those to keep your round going sometimes and I just didn't capitalize when I had opportunities."

Pat Fletcher, born in England, was the last Canadian winner, taking the 1954 event at Point Grey in Vancouver. Carl Keffer is the only Canadian-born champion, winning in 1909 and 1914. Albert Murray, a Canadian also born in England, won in 1908 and 1913.

The 2014 tournament will be played at Royal Montreal.

3 dead in Indiana bus crash

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A bus carrying teenagers returning to Indiana from a church camp in Michigan crashed Saturday afternoon just minutes from home, killing three people and sending 26 others to hospitals, officials said.

The bus came speeding off of Interstate 465 in northern Indianapolis, about a mile from the Colonial Hills Baptist Church that passengers attended, struck a retaining wall as it rounded a curve and overturned. The campers were returning from Camp CoBeAc in northern Michigan, about six hours away.

The church's youth pastor had sent a tweet a couple of hours before the crash saying the group was expected to arrive at the church about 4:15 p.m., around the time the accident happened.

"They were not that far from home. That only adds to the tragedy," said Indianapolis Public Safety Director Troy Riggs.

The dead included a man and his wife, Riggs said. Authorities did not provide information about the third victim.

Riggs and Mayor Greg Ballard visited the crash scene, where clothing, pillows and seat cushions from the bus were scattered along with at least two shattered windows, before they headed to the church. Riggs said there was no indication that the driver had a medical emergency and called the accident "a great tragedy."

Ballard said investigators were taking measurements and examining the bus to determine the cause of the crash.

WTHR-TV reported the bus driver told witnesses his brakes failed. Indianapolis Fire Department Lt. Ato McTush said police and fire officials had not determined whether the church-owned bus, which was carrying 37 people, had mechanical issues.

Duane Lloyd told WTHR that he heard a loud noise behind him as he was traveling near the intersection and saw the crash around 4:15 p.m.

"I heard a skid. I looked back. I see this bus in the air and people falling out of the bus," Lloyd said. "I could have gone my whole life without seeing that."

Karen Woodard, a member of Colonial Hills Baptist Church, cried as she stared at the wrecked bus surrounded by pillows, water bottles and clothing. She said the bus was returning from a youth camp in Michigan and some of the teens had their parents with them.

"It's so terrible. I can't believe it," she said.

Indianapolis Fire Department said crews had to free five people who were trapped inside after the crash. Several people stopped to help before first responders could arrive, including one man who helped pull the driver out of the bus, the department said.

"People were stopping their cars. People were literally trying to lift the bus," Lloyd said. "You just try to do what you can do."

Fire officials said the bus was carrying about 40 passengers and that the injured included children and adults.

Nine teenagers were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital, including one in critical condition. Ten others, including nine teenagers and a toddler, were in stable condition at Riley Hospital for Children, a spokeswoman for the hospitals said.

Many of the patients were suffering head, arm and leg injuries, fire officials said.

Roads near the scene were closed, and authorities urged people to use caution in the area. A hazardous materials crew was cleaning up diesel fuel that spilled in the crash.

Outside the church, a yellow school bus with the church school's name was parked outside with piles of sleeping bags and suitcases nearby. Families hugged outside and talked quietly before going inside, where they met with Ballard and Riggs Saturday evening.

Ballard described the families as "remarkably positive" despite their sorrow.

"Some of the teenagers are hurting pretty bad and you can see that in their faces," he said.

Church member Jeff Leffew, 44, of Fishers, who had three daughters on the bus that crashed and a fourth on a second bus, said he was waiting to pick them up in the church parking lot when the second bus arrived. He said he knew immediately that something was wrong because the kids on the bus were screaming.

He went to the crash scene and found his three daughters with only bumps and bruises.

He called the crash scene "surreal."

"You're just praying that it's not as bad as it looks," he said.

Samsung Reportedly Tests Galaxy Note III in Three Sizes

South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics has been long rumored to plan the launch of a new handset in the popular Galaxy Note series before the end of this year, and it seems that it still hasn?t decided what screen size the phone will pack.

In fact, rumor has it that the handset vendor would be currently testing three different flavors of the upcoming Android device, with 5.5-inch, 5.7-inch and 6-inch screens, respectively.

Recently, the smartphone was said to have been confirmed with a 5.7-inch touchscreen display, but it appears that this is not yet final.

According to a recent article on UnwiredView, which cites info coming from Indian logistics website Zauba, all the rumors on Galaxy Note III?s screen could be considered true, mainly due to the fact that the company is set to launch the device in more than one flavor this fall.

To be more precise, the news site claims that the company might be set to launch a Galaxy Note III mini variant that would pack a 5.5-inch touchscreen display, and which could also sport an 8-megapixel photo snapper inside.

Furthermore, the company might be set to launch a more durable version of the device, some sort of a Galaxy Note III Active model, which might sport the flexible display that previous rumors suggested to have been packed inside the smartphone.

A total of 8 different variants of the Galaxy Note III are said to be under testing, though it?s uncertain whether all of them will make it to shelves.

This also means that Samsung could include both an Exynos Octa CPU and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset, as well as a 13-megapixel photo snapper on its back, as previously rumored.

Some of these could be only specific to some carriers around the world, yet more info on the matter has yet to emerge.

One thing that is certain, however, is the fact that all the necessary details on Samsung?s plans for this large handset will be unveiled officially only in September at IFA 2013 in Berlin, so stay tuned to learn more on the matter.

Wasserman Schultz calls on Democratic mayor to quit

Sun Sentinel

2:41 p.m. EDT, July 26, 2013

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Weston, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, said Friday that the embattled mayor of San Diego should resign.

Bob Filner, the Democratic major of the nation?s eighth largest city, is an embarrassment to Democrats. Seven women have come forward accusing Filner of sexually harassing them.

In a statement released by the Democratic National Committee, Wasserman Schultz said:

?The misconduct Mayor Bob Filner has been accused of is reprehensible and indefensible. I am personally offended by his actions and I firmly believe no employee should face a hostile environment or harassment at their place of employment. There is no place for this type of conduct in the workplace and certainly not in our city halls and public offices.

?For the good of the City of San Diego, I call on Mayor Filner to resign.?

Fox says Parkinson's won't be focus of NBC comedy

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Michael J. Fox says Parkinson's disease will not be a major storyline of his upcoming NBC comedy.

On "The Michael J. Fox Show," the actor plays Mike Henry, a former local NBC newscaster with Parkinson's, who left the business to spend more time with his family. The series begins when he decides to return to work now that his kids are older.

At Saturday's Television Critics Association summer press tour, Fox said he didn't think about how others with Parkinson's would react to the show because he doesn't "vet creative instinct."

"I just go with it," he said. "I feel that this is the reflection of my experience and certainly in the pilot it was more prevalent than it is in subsequent scripts. The way I look at life and the reality of Parkinson's, sometimes it's frustrating and sometimes it's funny. I need to look at it that way and other people need to look at it that way. Beyond that we all got our own bag of hammers...I think people will look at that and say, 'Yeah, I need to laugh at my own stuff, too.'"

The premise of the show does have similarities to Fox's real-life story. The actor left "Spin City" in 2000 as he tried different treatments and medications to treat Parkinson's. He also used the opportunity to spend quality time with his four kids during their formative years.

"There's kind of a scrutiny of their stuff that won't exist if I'm being occupied by something else," joked Fox of the distraction of a full-time job.

Fox believes the viewers, however, will not be distracted by his character having Parkinson's on his new series.

"Parkinson's itself there's nothing horrifying to me. It's not horrible. I don't think it's gothic nastiness. There's nothing on the surface horrible about someone with shaking hands."

Since leaving "Spin City," Fox has had recurring roles on shows like "Rescue Me" and "The Good Wife." Those guest spots gave him the itch to do more.

"It really brought me to a place of, 'This is what I do,'" he said. "This is what I was built and programmed to do, and so I wanted to do it. It's what I've loved to do...I thought, 'Why can't I? There's no reason not to do it.'"

Because Fox plays a local NBC newscaster, the show will tap real people to do guest appearances that make the story more believable. Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie are in the pilot. New Jersey governor Chris Christie will appear in an episode as himself.

"A fictional television network didn't give us 22 episodes," Will Gluck, executive producer, said jokingly on why they decided to make Fox's Mike Henry work for NBC.

The Michael J. Fox Show" premieres Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. EST/PST.
