Common RNA pathway found in ALS and dementia

ScienceDaily (Sep. 30, 2012) ? Two proteins previously found to contribute to ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, have divergent roles. But a new study, led by researchers at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, shows that a common pathway links them.

The discovery reveals a small set of target genes that could be used to measure the health of motor neurons, and provides a useful tool for development of new pharmaceuticals to treat the devastating disorder, which currently has no treatment or cure.

Funded in part by the National Institutes of Health and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), the study will be published in the advance online edition of Nature Neuroscience on September 30.

ALS is an adult-onset neurodegenerative disorder characterized by premature degeneration of motor neurons, resulting in a progressive, fatal paralysis in patients.

The two proteins that contribute to the disease -- FUS/TLS and TDP-43 -- bind to ribonucleic acid (RNA), intermediate molecules that translate genetic information from DNA to proteins. In normal cells, both TDP-43 and FUS/TLS are found in the nucleus where they help maintain proper levels of RNA. In the majority of ALS patients, however, these proteins instead accumulate in the cell's cytoplasm -- the liquid that separates the nucleus from the outer membrane, and thus are excluded from the nucleus, which prevents them from performing their normal duties.

Since the proteins are in the wrong location in the cell, they are unable to perform their normal function, according to the study's lead authors, Kasey R. Hutt, Clotilde Lagier-Tourenne and Magdalini Polymenidou. "In diseased motor neurons where TDP-43 is cleared from the nucleus and forms cytoplasmic aggregates," the authors wrote, "we saw lower protein levels of three genes regulated by TDP-43 and FUS/TLS. We predicted that this, based on our mouse studies, and found the same results in neurons derived from human embryonic stem cells."

In 2011, this team of UC San Diego scientists discovered that more than one-third of the genes in the brains of mice are direct targets of TDP-43, affecting the functions of these genes. In the new study, they compared the impact of the FUS/TLS protein to that of TDP-43, hoping to find a large target overlap.

"Surprisingly, instead we saw a relatively small overlap, and the common RNA targets genes contained exceptionally long introns, or non-coding segments. The set is composed of genes that are important for synapse function," said principal investigator Gene Yeo, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and the Institute for Genomic Medicine at UC San Diego and a visiting professor at the Molecular Engineering Laboratory in Singapore. "Loss of this common overlapping set of genes is evidence of a common pathway that appears to contribute to motor neuron degeneration."

In an effort to understand the normal function of these two RNA binding proteins, the scientists knocked down the proteins in brains of mice to mimic nuclear clearance, using antisense oligonucleotide technology developed in collaboration with ISIS Pharmaceuticals. The study resulted in a list of genes that are up or down regulated, and the researchers duplicated the findings in human cells.

"If we can somehow rescue the genes from down regulation, or being decreased by these proteins, it could point to a drug target for ALS to slow or halt degeneration of the motor neurons," said Yeo.

These proteins also look to be a central component in other neurodegenerative conditions. For example, accumulating abnormal TDP-43 and FUS/TLS in neuronal cytoplasm has been documented in frontotemporal lobar dementia, a neurological disorder that has been shown to be genetically and clinically linked to ALS, and which is the second most frequent cause of dementia after Alzheimer's disease.

Patient selection for bilateral total knee replacement needs improvement

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Because there are more risks with having a total knee replacement in both legs at the same time than having a knee replacement in one leg, doctors in recent years have been selecting younger and healthier patients for the bilateral procedure. Now a new study by researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery has revealed that although patients are younger and healthier than those undergoing only one-sided surgery, they are becoming sicker and some complication rates have risen.

"Although we are selecting younger people, we can't ignore the fact that the population in general is getting sicker," said Stavros Memtsoudis, M.D., Ph.D., director of Critical Care Services at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City, who led the study. "Many of the complications that we studied didn't decrease over time as you would expect with younger patients and better health care, and some of the complications even increased." The study is published online ahead of print in the journal Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research.

Rising levels of obesity appear to be driving the complication rates, as well as the increase in the utilization of total knee replacements. Obesity puts extra stress on joints and bones and can cause premature osteoarthritis.

To conduct their research into trends regarding bilateral total knee replacements, researchers at HSS turned to the Nationwide Inpatient Survey, sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). This is the largest inpatient database available in the United States that includes information on patients of all ages. It collects data from about 20% of all hospitalizations in the U.S. The study investigators identified 258,524 bilateral total knee replacements performed between 1999 and 2008. The number of annual bilateral procedures increased by 75%. In 1999, bilateral procedures accounted for 3.7% of all knee replacement operations and in 2008, they accounted for 6% of the operations.

The average age of patients undergoing bilateral knee replacement decreased by 2.5 years from 1999 to 2008. As the years marched on, patients presented with higher rates of comorbidities, including renal failure, neurologic disease, liver disease, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Obesity increased by 131% during the study period. The only comorbidity that decreased was congestive heart failure.

Over the time period studied, the researchers identified a 3% increase in pneumonia, a 6% increase in pulmonary embolism, and a 3% increase in nonmyocardial infarction cardiac complications.

"The take home message of this paper is that we are fighting an uphill battle, because people are getting sicker, despite us attempting to limit risk by choosing younger people to do these procedures in," said Dr. Memtsoudis. "We have to start thinking of other interventions other than patient selection that we can implement in order to reduce these complications."

On a positive note, the investigators also found that absolute in-hospital mortality rates decreased at an average rate of 10% per year. The researchers attribute this decrease to advances in medicine and increased use of telemetry and observation in the last 10 to 15 years. "With advances in medicine and monitoring, we have been able to counteract this extreme event of mortality. If you get a complication and it is not recognized, you may die from it," said Dr. Memtsoudis. "If you observe people more thoroughly, you may not be able to prevent the complication, but you may be able to prevent a mortal event resulting from it."

The researchers also identified a cost shifting landscape. Patients stayed in the hospital an average of five days after their procedure in 1999 and an average of four days in 2008, but the proportion of discharges to a home or customary residence without home health care decreased at an average rate of 5.5% per year.

"Before this study, we were under the assumption that patient complications were steadily decreasing after bilateral knee arthroplasty, because of better patient selection and improvements in medical care," said Dr. Memtsoudis. "Now we understand that the picture is more complex. Patients being selected for the procedure may be getting younger, but they are not getting healthier and maybe that is why we don't see a drastic drop in complications."

Before embarking on a bilateral knee replacement, he said, patients should "critically look at themselves and talk to their physicians about how their health status plays into the choice of surgery."

More work is needed to identify ways to prevent complications in patients undergoing bilateral knee replacement and a recent conference sponsored by the Hospital for Special Surgery is aiming to do just that. The Consensus Conference on the Creation of Guidelines for Bilateral Knee Arthroplasty involved 40 experts from 16 institutions. The guidelines coming out of this conference, which are expected to be published within the next six months, address issues such as determining the appropriate workup and management for a patient undergoing bilateral knee replacement, and how long doctors should wait between procedures if a patient undergoes two operations.

B2B Marketing Innovation: What B2B Marketers Can Learn From ...

Posted on 27. Sep, 2012 by Lee Odden in B2B, B2B content marketing, Blog, interview, interviews, Marketing PR Conferences, marketingprofs, Small Business Internet Marketing, Small Business Marketing

Customer preferences for information discovery, consumption and engagement have evolved in a way that requires marketers to adapt. In particular, B2B marketers have had to find new and innovative ways to communicate with customers over long sales cycles filled with digital distractions from smartphones, tablets, computers and other connected devices.? Content types are equally diverse and can range from videos to white papers to infographics and even cartoons.

Tom Fishburne is the Founder and CEO of the wildly popular Marketoonist?and?in this interview, he?ll share a sneak peek into his B2B Marketing Forum presentation, the importance of storytelling, deciding on visual content and his prediction on the future of B2B Marketing and innovation.

We?re big fans of your work! ?Please describe how you become a ?Marketoonist?. ?Did your journey really start with doodling on?business?cases at Harvard?

Thanks! Harvard Business School isn?t exactly a feeder school for cartoonists.? I?d dreamed of being a cartoonist when I was a kid, but I?d let it go.? In business school, I started doodling again on the backs of business cases, then in the school paper, and pretty soon professors started asking me for cartoons to use as teaching aids.

I knew that cartoons were powerful communication devices, but I never saw cartooning as a potential career, so I worked in marketing after business school, at General Mills, Nestle, and Method Products.? I kept drawing cartoons on the side, sending them once a week to my marketing co-workers in a simple email newsletter.? Ten years later, my marketing cartoon reaches over 100,000 readers a week.

I thought about submitting cartoons to the New Yorker and the Wall Street Journal, which are two of the main cartoon markets.? But then, the Wall Street Journal contacted me.? They asked if I could create a 20-page cartoon book to help communicate with their readers on how to get the most out of the Journal.? It dawned on me that my unique combination of marketer and cartoonist (Marketoonist) could be valuable to others.

Two years ago, I started Marketoon Studios full-time to develop cartoon-based content marketing campaigns.? I work with a variety of B2B companies, including Oracle, Vodafone, Kronos, and Guidance Software to help them connect and engage with their audiences, using the unexpected medium of cartoons.

What are you most excited about when it comes to B2B marketing?

There has never been a better time to work in marketing. The shift in the role of marketers as publishers is particularly exciting, because it elevates our role to become thought leaders, rather than just pitching features and benefits and parroting our single-minded propositions.

At the MarketingProfs B2B Marketing Forum?next week you?re presenting ?Content Worth Sharing: What B2B Marketers Can Learn From Cartoons?. What are 2-3 of the most important takeaways from your presentation? What can people attending expect to learn?

With all of the technology at our disposal as marketers, we sometimes forget the value of the big marketing idea. Technology is only as valuable as the marketing ideas that the technology enables.? We can?t make an antisocial experience social just by adding social media.?? Technology can?t save a boring idea, but it can amplify a remarkable one.? The impetus is on marketers to create marketing worth sharing.

Another main point is the power of preaching to the choir.? It?s a misnomer that to be a big organization, we have to try to talk to everyone in our marketing.? One size actually fits none.? The more niche we get in our communication strategy, the more powerful the bond we create with our audience.? It?s better to be deeply appealing to a few than blandly appealing to the great majority.

Target Market - Marketoonist

One of my favorite sayings in marketing/sales is ?Facts tell, stories sell?. What advice can you share about the importance of storytelling with?B2B?marketing?

I completely agree with that sentiment.? Features and benefits are boring.? There is no longer a captive audience in marketing.? Without a story, it is easier than ever for our audiences to tune out our messages altogether.? In B2B marketing in particular, brand communication is frequently fact and feature-based.? There is a tremendous amount of power in telling stories when everyone else is telling facts.

Brand Storytelling - Marketoonist

The growing appeal of visual content has provided B2B marketers even more opportunities to attract, engage and convert prospects to customers across the buying cycle. What advice can you give companies that are trying to decide what kind of visual content or media is right for them and their target audience?

I think of visual content as Trojan horses.?? It?s most important that it breaks through the clutter and that the audience lets it in.? This means it can?t come off as an advertorial.? But it?s also key that it convey some meaning about your brand.? With our marketoon campaigns, the topics that we parody in a cartoon somehow link so the problems that that brand is trying to solve.? The brand proposition for Kronos is that ?workforce management doesn?t have to be so hard?.? So every marketoon parodies situations where workforce management has historically been ?hard?.? The audience sees the humor in the situations, and the Kronos brand comes along for the ride.

Developing a solid?B2B?marketing plan takes research, an understanding of customer goals, pain points and journey.? What are some of the most common myths or mistakes you?ve seen with B2B marketing planning?? Any tips on how to be more successful?

Don?t be a one hit wonder.? Many businesses take a ?Flock of Seagulls? approach to B2B marketing.? They create one piece of media and hope that it ?goes viral?. If it doesn?t, they often give up.? The web is full of ?social media ghost towns? from B2B brands that have given up.? What?s far more important than virality is continuity.? Commit to the long haul in how we connect and engage with our consumers, rather than the one-off campaign.

Go Viral - Marketoonist

With all the hype in the business marketing media, it?s tempting for companies to chase trending?B2B?marketing tactics. What tips can you share that will help marketers convince management on the importance of creativity, experimentation and innovation??

Chasing the shiny new thing is a real challenge for marketers.? It feels sometimes like the tail is wagging the dog.? Many campaigns are built around the tactic of the week, as if the tactic alone was the big idea.? The advice I would give marketers is to stay focused on the big ideas, and remember that the tactics are enablers to those big ideas.? Creativity and experimentation are needed to bring the big ideas to life.? That?s a better sell to management, and ultimately leads to better executions with customers too.

Go Digital - Marketoonist

Any predictions on the future of B2B marketing and the role of visual content?

I think that B2B marketing will become much more interesting in the future as we move beyond the hype of new technologies, and focus more on the big ideas that can be enabled by those technologies.? We can engage with our customers in more meaningful ways.? Technology amplifies great marketing.?? I think that visual content will play an increasing role in the marketing we want to amplify.

Please share a tip on how companies can come up with new and innovative ideas for their B2B marketing efforts.

Whether B2C or B2B, the most important shift in marketing is that brand communication is no longer a one-way command-and-control megaphone.? It?s a conversation.? Don Draper is no longer in charge of our brands.? Our audiences are in charge.? So the best inspiration for our marketing efforts comes from our audiences themselves.? Our goal should be, not to market how awesome our products and services are, but figuring out how to make our audiences more awesome.

Thank you for your insights Tom!

Libya leader to NBC: Film not behind consulate attack

In an exclusive interview with NBC News' Ann Curry, Libyan President Mohamed Magarief says he has "no doubt" the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi was pre-planned.

?

By NBC News staff

Updated at 4:01 a.m. ET: An anti-Islam film that sparked violent protests in many countries had?"nothing to do with" a?deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi earlier this month, Libya's president told NBC News.

In an exclusive interview with NBC News'?Ann Curry, President Mohamed Magarief discounted claims that the attack was in response to a movie produced in California and available on YouTube. He noted that the assault happened on Sept. 11 and that the video had been available for months before that.

"Reaction should have been, if it was genuine, should have been six months earlier. So it was postponed until the 11th of September," he said. "They chose this date, 11th of September to carry a certain message."

NYT: Deadly Libya attack a major blow to CIA efforts

Magarief said there were no protesters at the site before the attack, which he noted came in two assaults, first with rocket-propelled grenades on the consulate, then with mortars at a safe house.

Protests ignited by a controversial film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad spread throughout Muslim world.

The attack took the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens, as well as information management officer Sean Smith and security personnel Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty.

US Ambassador Chris Stevens was 'courageous,' Obama says

Magarief told Curry that based on the accuracy of the assault, he believes the attackers must have had training and experience using the weapons.

"It's a pre-planned act of terrorism," he said, adding that the anti-Islam film had "nothing to do with this attack."

'A strong friend'
Magarief said that while Libyans appeared to be behind the attack that "these Libyans do not represent the Libyan people or Libyan population in any sense of the word."

Hilary Stevens, sister of Christopher Stevens, the U.S. Ambassador to Libya who died Tuesday during an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. In an interview with Rock Center Anchor Brian Williams, Stevens reflects on her brother's legacy and work.

He added: "We consider the United States as a friend, not only a friend, a strong friend, who stood with us in our moment of need."

More than 40 people have been questioned in connection with the incident,?the Libyan leader?told Curry.

He described Stevens as a "humble and very unique human being" and a "great friend of Libya."

Thousands of Libyans stormed the headquarters of an Islamist militia group in Benghazi Friday night in a deadly exchange. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

Backlash: Protesting Libyans storm militant compound

The Obama administration initially maintained that the attacks were directly linked to protests over the film. Speaking on NBC?s ?Meet the Press? on Sept. 16, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said: ?What happened in Benghazi was in fact initially a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired hours before in Cairo, almost a copycat of the demonstrations against our facility in Cairo, prompted by the video.?

However, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney last week said it was "self-evident that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack."

Slain ambassador's mom: 'He was trying to do something much bigger'

Speaking before the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, President Barack Obama said: ?There are no words that excuse the killing of innocent? people.

On Tuesday, President Obama spoke to the United Nations general assembly in an emotional speech about the recent violence against Americans. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

Shared Resort Real Estate Ownership 2012: a Market Perspective ...

The ownership of shared resort real estate has become a preferred way to vacation for millions of Americans, according to the latest national research commissioned by Interval International, a prominent worldwide provider of vacation services. Among the findings: an estimated 12 million adults now own what is commonly referred to as ?timeshare,? and among the most appealing attributes associated with shared ownership is the ability to exchange, cited by eight in ten current owners.

These findings are from the newly-released Shared Resort Real Estate Ownership 2012: A Market Perspective, which is being distributed at the 14th Annual Shared Ownership Investment Conference held September 18 ? 20, in Orlando, Florida. The survey was conducted by MMGY Global with a nationally-representative sample of 810 active leisure travelers who met specific criteria with respect to their age and annual household income.

?The observations of this report, when viewed through the lens of current shared resort real estate owners, as well as non-owners who are interested in purchasing, will enable developers to compete more effectively in the broader lodging and hospitality sector,? said Peter C. Yesawich, Ph.D., vice chairman of MMGY Global.

?The implications suggest that the preferred product offerings and services will continue to evolve with the shifting social values of today?s leisure travelers. The results also reveal that the concept of shared ownership aligns well with marketplace trends, which bodes well for continued industry growth.?

?We believe this study will be extremely useful to developers and marketers since it examines the changing travel habits, preferences, and intentions of current and prospective owners. It provides valuable insights, such as those relating to price points and product characteristics, that indicate how the industry may need to evolve,? added Bryan Ten Broek, Interval?s senior vice president of resort sales and business development for North America.

Notable Findings

  • Leisure travelers interested in purchasing shared resort real estate tend to be married (63%) and average 42 years of age. Approximately four in 10 report having children who live in their household full time.
  • Leisure travelers interested in purchasing shared resort real estate took an average of just over three (3.4) leisure trips during the past 12 months, and spent an estimated $1,730 on lodging accommodations.
  • Eight in 10 leisure travelers who are current owners (80%), and a comparable percentage of prospective purchasers (84%), prefer a beach or lake experience on vacation.
  • Nearly nine in 10 prospective purchasers are interested in staying at a condominium-style resort during the next two years.
  • Mini-vacations and weekends at shared ownership resorts are, by far, the most highly rated incentives to participate in a sales tour, with eight in 10 leisure travelers who are prospective purchasers (83%) citing their appeal.

The data for this study were collected during June and July 2012 using a nationally representative panel of U.S. consumers, prequalified and screened for specific demographic and behavioral characteristics. Respondents were adults who: took at least one trip for leisure purposes of at least 75 miles away from home that required overnight accommodations during the previous year; were between 25 and 64 years of age; and reported a minimum annual household income of $50,000.

Oil extends losses as economy pessimism persists

BANGKOK (AP) ? The price of oil fell below $91 a barrel Wednesday in Asia, tracking stock markets which dropped on renewed pessimism about the outlook for economic growth.

Benchmark crude was down 62 cents to $90.75 a barrel at midafternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract dropped 56 cents to settle at $91.37 a barrel Tuesday in New York.

Oil failed to get an enduring boost from an improvement in U.S. consumer confidence to its highest level since February. Markets were overshadowed by comments from Charles Plosser, president of the U.S. Federal Reserve's Philadelphia branch, indicating that the Fed's efforts to support the world's biggest economy would likely fall short of its goals.

The comments reinforced the current pessimism about growth prospects, and dragged down stocks on Wall Street and then Asia. Benchmark crude has fallen from near $100 since the middle of last month. Energy prices tend to fall when growth is slow because of lower demand.

The U.S. economy is growing slowly. There also are concerns that Europe's debt crisis will continue to weigh on the global economy. China's export-driven economy has cooled off, largely due to Europe's problems.

Brent crude was down 65 cents at $109.80 a barrel on the ICE futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

? Heating oil was down 1.2 cents at $3.095 a gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline gained 0.7 cent to $2.83.

? Natural gas gained 2.6 cents to $2.95 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Group says some ignoring implications of landmark findings

In a new letter published in the journal Blood, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) calls for greater diligence by the scientific community to ensure that new papers reporting experiments on chimpanzees acknowledge the Institute of Medicine's landmark 2011 report "Chimpanzees in Biomedical and Behavioral Research: Assessing the Necessity." The IOM concluded that, "most current biomedical research use of chimpanzees is not necessary."

The letter responded to an article in Blood reporting a study in which two chimpanzees were infected with Hepatitis C, a disease area in which the IOM did not deem chimpanzee use necessary. The authors did not mention the IOM report or its findings. Since the publication of the IOM report in December 2011, numerous other journals have published disease studies on chimpanzees that do not mention the relevant IOM findings.

In the Blood letter, PETA Associate Director of Laboratory Investigations Justin Goodman stated, "Authors, peer-reviewers and editors must ensure that findings like those of the IOM are addressed in relevant manuscripts in order to prevent replication or extension of work that could subject additional chimpanzees to pain and distress when they have been deemed unnecessary to the research in question. One need not look any further than the IOM report to appreciate that experiments on chimpanzees have clearly continued despite having limited utility and the existence of valid alternatives."

A commentary by Goodman on the issue was also published in the Hastings Center's Bioethics Forum in July.

Following discussions with PETA, the Journal of Experimental Medicine and Gastroenterology have added editorial notes referencing the IOM report to recent manuscripts.

Earlier this month, PETA sent a letter to the National Institutes of Health's Working Group on the Use of Chimpanzees in NIH-Supported Research requesting that it issue a directive requiring that all publications reporting federally-funded experiments on chimpanzees acknowledge the IOM report, the conclusions of which NIH fully accepted.

Silicon Valley?s Next Great Company

Ever since Facebook went public, people in Silicon Valley have been a bit bummed out about the tech industry. Keep in mind that the Valley is infinitely optimistic, so even when they?re bummed, folks here keep smiling. Still, in numerous conversations over the past few months, I?ve detected a sense of gloom, and it?s obvious why.

Social networking had long been hailed as the next big thing, a revolutionary tech that promised to change the world and rake in big money, too. While it?s still promising, Facebook?s dismal stock performance (not to mention that of related companies like Zynga) has cooled the industry on big, ad-sponsored consumer websites. Meanwhile, Google is trying to figure out what it wants to do with its future, while Apple, the tech world?s engine of hardware innovation, feels less exciting than it did when the iPhone and iPad were new products. So far, there?s no sign that Tim Cook?s company is interested in pursuing anything more than incremental, hyper-profitable annual updates to its product lineup (not that there?s anything wrong with that).

The Valley likes to anoint standard-bearers, companies whose amazing, unreasonable success points to sunny days ahead. Before Facebook, everyone was gaga for Google, and before Google there were all those dot-coms. Now there?s a hole in the industry?s crystal ball. There?s no consensus on which company will define the next era of technology.

I believe the tech industry?s next great company is Square. If you?ve heard of Jack Dorsey?s three-year-old firm, you likely think of it as a payments startup. Square is famous for its white plastic card reader, a device that lets small businesses use phones and tablets to accept credit cards. But calling Square a mere payments company minimizes its potential, and it misses Dorsey?s world-changing mission.

If you study Square?s products and its pricing, and if you talk to Dorsey about his plans, you?ll find that the company?s real mission is to alter the psychology of consumption. Dorsey is bent on creating frictionless commerce. His long-term goal is to make accepting payments a breeze for businesses, and he wants to make paying for stuff invisible?for everyone, across the entire economy, for all types of goods and services. If Square succeeds in that mission, it will become a persistent, ever-present part of our daily lives. You?ll use it every time you engage with businesses?which might mean you?ll interact with Square more often than Google, Facebook, Amazon, or even Apple.

I spoke to Dorsey and Keith Rabois, Square?s chief operating officer, at the company?s gleaming San Francisco office last month. I?d come to chat about two recent announcements that won lots of headlines, but whose combined effects haven?t really been appreciated by the tech press. In August, Square announced that, beginning this fall, it will process all credit card payments at Starbucks stores. When the system is fully up and running, customers will be able to shop at Starbucks just by saying their names: After you opt in, your name and photo will pop up on the Starbucks cashier?s screen when you enter the store with your phone in your pocket. To pay, you?ll just tell the cashier to put it on your tab. That?s it?you don?t have to remove your phone or swipe or sign anything.

A few weeks after the Starbucks deal, Square dropped the other shoe. The company had long charged businesses a 2.75 percent fee to process payments through Square, which is less than most credit card processing companies ask for. But now Square has made the deal even better, rolling out a flat fee of $275 per month. The price applies to transactions under $400 on the first $250,000 in a business?s yearly sales, which means that the fee can be as low as 1.3 percent. Businesses that go over the $400-per-item or $250,000-per-year limits pay 2.75 percent on those transactions; the 2.75 fee is also still available for businesses with a low volume of monthly credit transactions. ?The basic premise of the program is we wanted to remove any excuse for not taking credit,? Rabois says. ?There is no longer any excuse for an American business to not accept credit cards today?they're handicapping their own sales and profits if they don?t, and their customers will be happier if they do.?

Taken together, the Starbucks deal and the monthly pricing plan address what had been Square?s greatest problem?the chicken-and-egg hurdle that all online marketplaces face when starting out. Square?s pay-by-name system will only achieve its potential if lots of stores accept it, but stores have little incentive to sign up with Square if there aren?t a lot of customers clamoring to pay that way. These two announcements solve both sides of the puzzle. The Starbucks collaboration will introduce millions of new customers to the magic of paying with Square, while the new pricing plan will give businesses a clear financial incentive to sign up. Once both sides get together, Square will be unstoppable.
