(AP) ? U.S. stocks are falling at midday, promising another nerve-wracking day for investors who just endured one of the worst losses of the year.

The Dow Jones industrial average is down 59 points to 12,360, after losing as much as 104 points earlier.

The Dow plunged 161 the day before on concerns about Europe, marking its third-worst loss of the year. May will be the Dow's first monthly loss since September ? another unwelcome milestone.

The Standard & Poor's 500 is down 10 points to 1,303. The Nasdaq composite index is down 26 points to 2,811.

Troubling reports about the U.S. economy weighed on the market. The government reported that claims for unemployment benefits climbed last week, and that first-quarter economic growth had been lower than expected. .

Amid bribery scandal, Wal-Mart talks integrity

By Jessica Wohl and Lisa Baertlein, Reuters

FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas -- ?Top executives of Wal-Mart Stores Inc did not directly mention a Mexican bribery scandal at an employee pep rally on Wednesday, but asked their international workers to focus on "integrity" as a core value.

The world's largest retailer has been under fire from shareholders and activists after the New York Times reported in April that management at Wal-Mart de Mexico, or Walmex, allegedly orchestrated bribes of $24 million to help it grow quickly last decade and that Wal-Mart's top brass tried to cover it up.

The matter is being investigated by a number of government agencies in Mexico and the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Wal-Mart is also conducting an internal probe.

Executives talked around the allegations in Mexico, the company's first and largest international market. They referenced integrity as one of the company's core values and underscored the importance of complying with local laws.

"It's doing the right thing, every single day," Wal-Mart President and Chief Executive Officer Mike Duke told international workers gathered at the University of Arkansas' Barnhill Arena.

Doug McMillon, president and CEO of Walmart International, said it was up to every employee -- from new associates to top executives -- to guard the company's principles.

"If you see something in your business that you don't think is right, you need to say something," McMillon said.

Scot Rank, president and CEO, Walmart Mexico and Central America, may have come the closest to directly on the allegations, without specifically mentioning bribery.

"Over the years we have faced difficult and challenging times in Mexico and Central America. These events have united us even more, they have motivated us to continue, to continue pursuing excellence, and work with respect and integrity," Rank said at the end of the Mexico and Central America unit's presentation.

Wal-Mart's focus in China, the world's fastest-growing major economy, will be on expanding the right way, Scott Price, president and CEO of Walmart Asia, said earlier in the morning.

"We have to be compliant, we have to follow every rule, every regulation in the country," Price said.

Shareholders, including some of the largest U.S. public pension funds, have called for Duke, former Wal-Mart Stores CEO Lee Scott, Chairman Robson "Rob" Walton and others to be ousted from the company's board of directors in the wake of the Mexico scandal. But such efforts have little chance of succeeding because the family of founder Sam Walton controls roughly half of Wal-Mart's shares and votes.

More than 1,300 international employees traveled to northwest Arkansas for this week's events, which culminate in Friday's annual shareholders meeting.

During Wednesday's meeting, as in previous years, a selection of top international employees were given "Integrity in Action" awards.

Despite the bribery allegations, this year's celebration is still expected to be an upbeat affair. Wal-Mart is marking 50 years since Walton opened the first Walmart store on July 2, 1962, and at Wednesday's meeting representatives from Chile played a video of employees in that country singing "Happy Birthday."

Company shares, which have more than rebounded from the roughly 8 percent drop in the days following the New York Times Mexico story, are trading near all-time highs. The stock was up 16 cents at $65.84 at midday on Wednesday after rising to $65.95.

Google Receives New ISO Certification for Business Apps

While everyone is wringing their hands over whether or not Facebook is a real business, Google, the ?competitor? that is most often mocked when held up against Facebook, is doing things that only serious businesses do.

Rather than toss and turn over IPO?s and the unending questions as to whether Facebook is actually worth a plug nickel, Google has strengthened its position as a a company that can provide services for businesses across many areas not just marketing.

So why is this important to marketers? Well, when you tie your marketing efforts to any channel your hope is that the channel is strong and will be around for a while. I?m not implying that Facebook won?t be around but I will say that Google?s broader approach to business makes them something that Facebook can only dream about but likely never become in light of it?s current inability to cleanly execute its IPO etc etc.

So what has Google done exactly? It has received its ISO 27001 certification for its business apps. TechCrunch states

Google just announced that its Google Apps for Business service has earned ISO 27001 certification. This certifies that Google is following the standard ISO information security management protocols and best practices ?for the systems, technology, processes and data centers serving Google Apps for Business.?

Google?s product set allows them to get into the infrastructure of business which is less subject to the whims of an ever changing social media landscape. Heck, after how some people have shared concern about the viability of Facebook moving forward you would think 900 million users means nothing (which is silly talk but it makes for great headlines). Lest we forget that in total the number of people impacted by Google products is likely to dwarf 900 million?

By focusing on the security of a company?s infrastructure Google changes the battlefield with competitors to one that many can?t even show up on because they don?t play there. The Official Google Enterprise blog opens the post with this certification announcement like this

In the early days of the cloud, security concerns were often at the top of business minds as they considered moving to Google Apps. More recently, though, security has become a major reason businesses are moving to the cloud. The reason for this shift is that businesses are beginning to realize that companies like Google can invest in security at a scale that?s difficult for many businesses to achieve on their own. This investment has produced an infrastructure and a set of services with robust data protections for our customers.

The cloud, infrastructure, security. Pretty big buzz words that Facebook never comes up in the conversation about but EVERY business on the planet is concerned with at this stage of the game. Hmmmmm.

Facebook will be OK but I think we often have the discussion backwards when we hold these two companies side by side. Most often cited is that Google is a social media also ran and that Google+ will never be a challenger for the social media crown. While that may be true Google knows full well that it doesn?t need to be at the top of the social media heap. Where it needs to be is on top of search and getting deeper and deeper into the enterprise.

If you would like to compare the two side by side, Facebook is literally wiping the floor with Google on the social media front. But what about Facebook?s efforts to do email and document sharing? Do you think they are doing that as a hobby? No. They realize they need to be deeper into the customer than just a social media profile. Social media profiles are ultimately replaceable. Once again, cool your jets because I don?t think anyone is set to replace Facebook anytime soon. In fact, Facebook?s biggest competitor is themselves in that arena since the title is theirs to lose just like Google?s lead in search is.

In the end, it?s important to pay attention to what Google is doing outside of search and social. Why? Well, when you get into a budget meeting and your IT or software services folks (you know the ones that actually control whether a business can do business on a day to day basis in the digital era) say they are using Google for several apps that turns heads especially when it saves money. Then when the C-suite gets wind that Google+ is being integrated into everything Google does (the same Google that does MANY other things for said company) then attention is given. When attention is given, questions are asked. Well, you know the rest.

Is this some kind of death knell for Facebook? Not that I can see but you may feel differently. I think it is, however, a call to see just what Google is in spite of the barrage of negative press about what it doesn?t do well. What it does do well is integral to how business gets done. Those are important keys to be holding, don?t you think?

Is domestic violence more common in same sex relationships?

Hello all,

I?ll focus on same sex male relationships in this question.

There?s no denying that a large majority of men would be more likely to hit another man, as opposed to a woman.

Indeed, if a woman approached me on the street attempting to mug me, my flight response would kick in. Or at least I would make an effort to detain her. However, if a man approached me on the street, I?d be far more likely to fight back.

I was wondering if the same applies to a relationship.
Being heterosexual myself, I?ve been brought to my knees emotionally by a female partner. I?ve been made very angry in heated arguments? But I?d never dream of hitting my partner; even if they cheated on me.

However, I wonder how I would react if I was homosexual and my partner deeply hurt me, say after cheating on me. I think I?d be far more likely to express my anger physically.

So yes, as the question says? Is domestic violence more common in same sex relationships?

May I also note that I am not an aggressive person.

Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Seth
Not at all, actually it?s less common. While you may see a women as less than an equal I see them as an equal a women attacks me and I will hit back.

Dell begins test deployment of ARM-based Copper servers

Dell begins test deployment of ARM-based Copper servers

Back in February, Dell revealed its intentions to enter the ARM server field. Today, the company announced that it is shipping ARM-based Copper servers to a limited number of customers. Copper is lower power than x86 servers, and Dell thinks this makes it a good fit for energy-intensive platforms such as Hadoop. In that same vein, the company views Copper as a cost-effective option that can be used for light workloads and for testing performance. In addition to deploying its new servers to select clients, Dell will be looking to the open source community for help in further developing its ARM system (the platform currently runs Linux). No word on when Copper will move beyond the testing phase.

Bigfoot Hair Samples Wanted At Oxford University

By: Rob Adams
05/24/2012 10:41 AM ET

Oxford University wants Bigfoot DNA, such as hair samples, in an effort to crack the mystery. They want to find out if Bigfoot (or the Yeti) actually exists as a species, and they are determined to do it through genetics.

Bigfoot Hair Samples

In a project announced this week, Oxford University and Lausanne Museum of Zoology scientists appealed to museums, scientists and yeti aficionados to share samples thought to be from the mythical ape-like creature. Researchers plan to focus on hair to determine the species it originated from.

Bryan Sykes of Oxford University said the group had already received samples to test, including blood, hair, and items supposedly chewed by Bigfoot.

Sykes acknowledged that the chances of proving a new yeti species? existence was low, but ?if we don?t look, we?ll never find out.?

Other experts agreed recent advances made in DNA testing could theoretically solve the Bigfoot question.

?If the Yeti is real and somebody has found bits of their hair, you should be able to tell from the DNA in the hair if this is actually a Yeti,? said Mark Thomas, a professor of evolutionary genetics at University College London. He is not connected to the Bigfoot project.

New genetic tests will be done on just a few strands of hair and should be completed within weeks. Even if the sample is judged to come from an unknown species, scientists should be able to tell how closely it is related to other species, including apes or humans.

In fact, there is already evidence of interbreeding between homo sapiens and Neanderthals.

Interior Design With an Orangery | Home Improvement | Furniture

Home Decoration, Interior Design

Interior Design With an OrangeryGiven current house prices, lots of people cannot supply move residence in order in order to increase more useful space. Instead they may be taking a look at adding additional rooms to their existing homes, however a full height extension may be pricey, particularly if they?re only looking for one extra room. A conservatory is definitely solution, but increasingly, homeowners are choosing to include an orangery instead ? which is not only a beautiful option, but can also be more practical and of long term value. The important thing difference between an orangery along with a conservatory will probably be the number of glass used.

An orangery is constructed of less than 70% glass along with the rest made up of a low wall and quite often a level, covered roof with perhaps a ?roof lantern? to feature additional light from above. Obviously these reviews will vary based on what is required, but it is an outstanding general guideline. Whether the building is considered a conservatory or an orangery under building regulations and planning rules for you will depend on the volume of glass it contains. Below 70% glass and you have an orangery, above and it is a conservatory. This can be important since a conservatory will not require planning permission (except if you are adding them a listed building), whereas an orangery does. However, I would always advisable that you consult with the relevant authorities before deciding to go ahead with construction, to get cautious.

Adding an orangery could be more expensive than a conservatory in relation to building costs, but in the longer term, it very well could be the better investment. Just because a conservatory has additional glass, it?s more susceptible to variations within the weather. In spite of additional heating for winter and suitable blinds to guard you out of your summer sun, they could continue to stay colder inside the winter and hotter during summer than an orangery, which, with less glass, may possibly be more insulated, cheaper to heat and far more likely to be used all year round.

The available choices available at the moment for the kinds of orangery you are able to choose are great. You can receive for uPVC, hardwoods or oak, inside a traditional or contemporary style, reported by your very own taste and what would fit your home. That may prefer the color that you pick, meaning you can create it as individual as you wish!

I've written a little app which lets you keep watch on your account and notify you of sales. It also shows you assorted statistics, sales details, and lets you read your iStock sitemail. It's free.

It is available (for free!) from the Android Market. Just start the Market application on your phone and search for Livestock.
Or if you have a barcode scanner on your phone, just scan this:
livestock2-market-qr

The current version is 2.9.100 (as of 8th May 2012).

If you have an older phone running Android 1.5, 1.6 or 2.0 then look for LiveStock Classic in the Android Market.
The current version of LiveStockClassic is 2.7.40 (as of 16th April 2012).

Edited to refer to the latest version.

Updated to give better information (size and royalty earned) for recent sales.

Because this involves scraping data from more webpages, the very first time you run the application it will spend quite a while in the "Talking to iStock: Gathering data..." phase.? How long depends on quite a few factors including, of course, how good a signal your phone has and whether it's connected by 2G, 3G or Wifi.? Best to set it running and go make yourself a sandwich and a cup of tea (or a pie and a pint if that's more your thing).? Subsequent refreshes will be much faster (unless you have hundreds of sales and don't refresh for days).

Edited to remove obsolete screenshot.

Hi there

That's odd. I just checked with my phone to make sure that it is still active and all looks fine. I took a look through the web logs and I don't see any Android browsers connecting for the last couple of days. My first thought was that you might be using one of the 3rd party browsers that are in beta-test, but I don't see any connections from them, either. Do you remember roughly what day and time you looked with your phone's browser (and what timezone you're in!) because I'd really like to get to the bottom of it if there's a problem on the server.
However, on a different note...now that I have an API key from istock, I'm completely rewriting the application. It might be worth holding off for a little while whilst I knock it into shape.

Thanks a lot for your interest,
Martin

Thanks for trying again. My best guess is that there's a cache somewhere between your phone and the livestock webserver and it's feeding you old pages. My phone doesn't seem to give me a cached page, so I wonder if it's a difference between the USA and UK services, or if you're on some non-standard service.

When I have a stable version of the app I'll submit it to the Android Marketplace (it'll still be free) and any such problems should go away. Sorry that it's being a pain for you in the meantime

Is this still in the works?? This would be especially useful now that the iStock page is slightly mangled in the Android browser (the main toolbar gets wrapped around under the search bar).

Development of LiveStock is on hold for the time being. I'm hoping to put some time aside in the next few weeks in order to knock it into a decent shape.

If I don't find time to do that, I'll put out the version that's currently on my phone. This doesn't do much more than let you know you've had a sale and what you've earned.

Sorry for the delay on this - real life sometimes gets in the way

Heh - actually, the reasons for delay have changed somewhat. The chap in the Glasgow store where I got my phone told me that I was one of the first people to get a G1 from them, and that I was definitely the first to bring one in for repair. I don't expect it back for at least another couple of weeks...hopefully I can then make some more progress.

Thanks for the patience!

A positive update, at last.
My G1 has been repaired and returned. I'm re-implementing LiveStock, building on what I learned about programming for the G1 first time around. I'm planning on releasing an alpha version of LiveStock2 in the next few days:
- the new version will be simpler than the old version to avoid using up the G1's resources so quickly - this should result in fewer bugs and better battery life;
- I'll be releasing through the Android Market rather than my own web pages - that means installing and upgrading between versions will be more straightforward. I understand that it takes a little while for an application to work its way through the Market after release, so I'll not announce its availability until it's actually visible.

Thanks for your patience!

I'm happy to announce that a new version of LiveStock is now available.
It is available (for free!) from the Android Market. You'll find it in the Market in Applications->Tools, or just search for "livestock".

The current version is 2.0.14 alpha (as of 17 April 2009); this is a complete rewrite of the previous version of the application. Although it is usable and, I think, useful, I'd like to stress that this should be considered alpha quality software.

I am aware of a few flaws. In particular, the first time you run it it can take a long time to pull some of your information from the istock servers. This pull really should happen in a background thread - because it doesn't, your phone may warn you that LiveStock is taking a long time to respond. If that happens, just touch the "Wait" button. This is the item highest on my priority list to fix.

The first time you run it, it will ask you to enter your istock login details. I strongly recommend that you touch the "Test" button before saving so that LiveStock can attempt a connection to the iStock servers to check you entered them correctly.
screen1

The main screen will display some current stats and your most recent downloads.
screen2

From the main screen, just touch the refresh button and it will pull your current details from istock.

This is still an early version and there are many things I want to improve and features I want to add. First on the list of things to fix is the horrible delay the first time you pull data from istock. The next most important feature is to make LiveStock run as a service so that it automatically pulls data from istock at regular intervals. Once that is done, it will be able to notify you as sales happen.

Of course, this isn't istock-supported software so please direct your complaints, plaudits, requests, rants, bug reports, etc to me either in this thread or via sitemail.

Enjoy.

I've just pushed a new version (2.0.15) to the Market. If you look for Livestock in the market and you already have 2.0.14 installed, you will be given the option to update.

The main change in 2.0.15 is that the disturbing silence (or even more disturbing Force Close/Wait dialog) when refreshing the list of recent downloads is now replaced by a progress indicator - no more wondering whether or not there's anything happening. A lesser, but related, change is that there is now a "Refresh recent DLs" option from the Menu button to force an update of the recent downloads list.

Please let me know if these changes don't seem to work for you, or if other issues appear.

The current plan is for the next release to run as a service and automatically inform you of sales - no more having to hit Refresh.

I'm pleased to announce that I've just pushed a new version (v2.1.0) of LiveStock to the Android Market. If you search for Livestock in the market on your Android phone you have the option to install or, if you have an earlier version installed already, to upgrade.

There are a number of changes in this release:
- the list of recent downloads does not update automatically. You can request an update simply with MENU->Refresh Recent DLs. This was made manual as updating the DL list involves a fair amount of network traffic which helps run down your phone's battery.
- you don't need to request that Livestock checks to see if you've had a sale. Instead it runs in the background and automatically checks for any changes to your balance. If your balance changes, you get a notification. (But see my note below!)
- a few minor cosmetic changes.
- quite a few small bugs have been squashed.

Automatic Checks
Every 20 minutes or so, LiveStock will check to see if your balance has changed. If it does change, LiveStock posts a notification.
livestocknotification1

livestocknotification2

If your phone is in sleep-mode (i.e. when the screen has blanked), LiveStock will not wake the phone to check the balance. Waking the phone seems to be relatively power-hungry and it runs the battery down far too quickly. I hope to improve this in future. However, if some other application wakes the phone then LiveStock will take the opportunity to do its checks.

I hope you like the changes. Please do let me know of any bugs or strange experiences, or feature requests you may have.

Edit: I should add, this has been tested on both the older version of Android (1.1) and the new "cupcake" release (1.5).

Enjoy!

Hi,

Most of the time if i open your app it says "stats updated" and if i close it and then open it it will give the new stats. I have never seen a notification about automatic stats update after 20 minutes. It only gives this message if i have the app opened. Am i missing something?

I love this app! thanks for your hard work.

Michel

Hmmm...I've seen the same thing some days, but not always. In a future version I'll try triggering the notifications a different way and see if that helps.

If I can get to the bottom of it, I'll put out a new version in the next couple of days. If I can't find the problem immediately, it will probably be a couple of weeks before I put out a new version due to other commitments.

Many thanks for the report!

I've completely rewritten the automated checking and it now works in a way that I think you'll like. The checking also does less processing, which means less drain on the battery. Which means LiveStock can now check for and notify you of sales even when the phone is sleeping.

I'll delay releasing it until after Thursday night's downtime just in case there are any site changes that would affect LiveStock.
