Video: K.C. Chiefs team says their ?hearts are heavy? after player?s suicide



>>> will be playing this afternoon at home playing with heavy hearts as the team comes to grips with a horrible tragedy. on saturday live backer jovan belcher killed his girlfriend and himself. good morning.

>> reporter: good morning to you. jovan belcher pulled out a gun and shot himself here at arrowhead stadium . that moment the events leading up to it have left the city and team in shock. shots rang out at this home. shot, kasandra perkins.

>> a lady came out and said her daughter had been shot by her boyfriend several times. we went in the residence, she was taken to a hospital and died later.

>> reporter: jovan belcher is said to have shot perkins. they are parents of a 3-month-old baby. just ten minutes after the murder, belcher was right next to arrowhead stadium with a gun talking to his coach and general manager. belcher apparently thanked them for what they did for him, then pulled the trigger.

>> as officers pulled up and fwan to park, that's when they heard the gunshot and it appears the individual took his own life.

>> reporter: in belcher 's hometown of babylon, new york, a candlelight vigil for the 25-year-old who fought his way into the nfl as an undrafted player for the kansas city chiefs . former team members can only speculate about the murder/suicide.

>> at that tender age when you're that young you just think you're invincible, you're in control of everything, you can control everything. you haven't had the ability yet to dproe grow up and know that we're not in control of anything.

>> reporter: belcher 's death follows other recent nfl player suicides. back in may former san diego charger junior seau shot himself . in 2011 before taking his own life, dave instructed a family he wanted his brain to be studied for injuries. the kansas city chiefs belcher 's death comes during a losing season full of injuries and disappointment. the team issued a statement saying in part our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the families and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy. the chaefs will host the carolina panthers later this afternoon. it's an important game but after what happened here, erica, wins and losses are put in perspective.
