LINCOLN ? TransCanada Inc. announced plans Thursday to build a 1.1 million-barrel-a-day pipeline across Canada.
But the company says that doesn?t mean the long-delayed Keystone XL pipeline, which would cross Nebraska, is unnecessary.
The Canadian pipeline, called Energy East, is one solution for transporting crude oil, according to the company.
?But the industry also requires additional pipelines such as Keystone XL to transport growing supplies of Canadian and U.S. crude oil to existing North American markets,? said Russ Girling, TransCanada?s president and chief executive officer. ?Both pipelines are required to meet the need for safe and reliable pipeline infrastructure and are underpinned with binding, long-term agreements.?
The $12 billion Energy East pipeline would carry tar-sand crude from western Canada to refineries in the east and for export. It?s projected to be in service by late 2017 for deliveries in Quebec and 2018 for deliveries to New Brunswick.
The announcement comes three weeks after a runaway train, carrying tar-sand oil, crashed in an eastern Canada town. The tanker cars exploded, and the resulting firestorm killed 42 people. Five people still are reported missing.
