Waverly baseball team unable to play state title game after player arrests

SCOTTSBLUFF -- Three Waverly baseball players were arrested and three were cited in connection with vandalism throughout Scottsbluff Tuesday night, prompting the team to withdraw from a state tournament.

Adam Jorgensen, 18; Kyle Dabaets, 18, and Jesse Maguire, 18, were arrested on charges of minor in possession. Maguire has also been charged with destruction of property. Three players, Dillon Benson, 16; Calvin Yelkin, 17; and Luke Sumovich, 18, were cited on charges of minor in possession of alcohol.

Waverly had qualified for the finals, to be played today in the Class B State Tournament in Gering. The team is reported to be unable to fill its roster and will not be playing. The team had been scheduled to play Hickman-Norris at 4 p.m. in the title game.

With Waverly unable to play, Hickman-Norris has been awarded the championship title.

According to Scottsbluff Police Capt. Brian, Wasson, officers were requested in the 3500 block of Avenue D early Wednesday morning to a report from a resident in the area. A woman told police that she watched as a man struck her mailbox several times with a baseball bat. The woman said she watched as the man and a second man fled the area on foot.

The men were last seen in the area of the Hampton Inn. Officers investigating learned that some of the state baseball tournament teams were staying at the motel. The investigation identified the two men present when the mailbox was damaged, and police recovered evidence of the crime. During the investigation, officers contacted team members who had allegedly consumed alcoholic beverages, and they were cited.

The investigation continued into the morning hours, and additional reports of damaged mailboxes are currently being investigated. Two of the damaged mailboxes in these reports are believed to have occurred Sunday afternoon, two days prior to this investigation.
