Max and Kim Voelz served together in Iraq in the same Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit ? that's the Army's elite bomb squad.
The couple met on Valentine's Day in 1997 at EOD school. They married on June 12, 1999.
"We deployed in 2003. We were in the same unit. She ripped bombs apart by hand in Iraq just like I did," Max says. "There was no being scared, no doubt, no 'I might die' ? we never talked about that."
One night in 2003, Max called in the location of an explosive and sent his wife to disarm it.
"That night she was at a different base and I tried to talk to her on the phone before she went ? just to tell her, like, an extra, 'Be careful.' But she was already on her way to take care of it, so I didn't get to," Max says.
Kim, 27, didn't survive that mission. Her injuries were severe. One leg was blown off and she was in a medically induced coma when Max got to the hospital.
"I talked to her the whole time she was in there," he says. "The nurses were telling me to talk to her because they assured me that they had seen people come out of comas before and that they remembered hearing things that people said.
"I mean, what are you gonna tell your wife who's dying? That you love her and you don't want her to die. But I knew she was dead a long time before the doctors stopped working on her. You hold someone's hand, and then it feels different. "
She did the same job that guys who think they're tough do. And she did it just as good as I did, and I think I'm the best that there is.
- Max Voelz
Max called her parents because he didn't want a stranger knocking on their door in an Army uniform to break the news: "I told them that she died in my arms 10 minutes ago," he says.
"You know, she did something that most people weren't willing to do, and I don't want people to think that because she was killed while she was working that she was bad at her job, or that she died because she was a girl," Max says. "She did the same job that guys who think they're tough do. And she did it just as good as I did, and I think I'm the best that there is."
When the Voelzes got married they had plans to retire from the Army. Now, at 36, Max says he doesn't have a plan. After Kim died on Dec. 13, 2003, Max was sent home. He stayed in the Army for a few more years.
"I am an Army widower. I don't think there's very many of us," he says. "And when I receive a condolence letter from a high-ranking government official that says, 'Mrs. Voelz, we're sorry for the loss of your husband,' it just makes it seem like nobody knows we exist."

Mark Zuckerberg wants clarity on his remarks about whether children under age 13 should be allowed to join Facebook.
While Facebook might consider allowing pre-teens to join the social networking site in the future, "we just haven't gone there yet," Zuckerberg said at the e-G8 Internet forum in Paris, according to PaidContent.
As Zuckerberg explained in his original remarks at a summit on innovation in education, current regulations--specifically, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act--hinder Facebook's ability to let children join the site. It's theoretically possible, but a parent would have to fax a signature or use credit-card verification.
"In the future, it makes sense to explore that," Zuckerberg said. "We would need to try to figure out a lot of ways to make sure they are safe. That's extremely important. That's not on the top of the list for things for us to figure out right now."
Of course, plenty of children under the age of 13 are on Facebook already, as my colleague Tony Bradley pointed out. By Consumer Reports' estimate, 7.5 million Facebook users are under age 13, and 5 million are under age 10. Short of vigilant parenting, the only thing stopping kids from signing up is an age gate. And it should come as no surprise to anyone that children are capable of lying about their age.
So this whole controversy strikes me as silly. If Facebook wants to create a legitimate process for parents to sign their kids up on the site, that's wonderful. At least that way, Facebook could set up extra privacy safeguards for young users, such as restrictions on what information can be made public or shared with advertisers. Isn't that what everyone's worried about in the first place?

One of the main characteristics of wealthy people is that they have confidence in their ability to make decisions, in their purpose, and in their personal finance budget. Confidence, self confidence specifically, is a learnable skill, and to become strong in confidence is to understand how to place the mind in the right state. With mind and money aligned, wealthy people are much happier than those who only chase money as an end goal.
Confidence: The Four States of Thought
Autopilot Thinking is when people are over familiar with routine decisions, and can quickly form assumptions about what is expected ? like when using credit cards in the store, or driving home along a well known route. This is an external thinking state and can be harmful. Another harmful state is the internal, critical voice, which so often tells people that they are an imposter ? that they ?can?t do? or ?aren?t good enough?
There are two helpful thinking states which balance this ? the internal voice is the thinking state where the mind assesses options, while the external helpful state is the engaged state, where the mind is concentrating on solving problems.
The objective in managing money, in assessing the personal finance statement, and especially if financial planning has been ignored and money is a problem, is to move from a harmful state to a helpful state, by working out where all the money goes, balanced against when it all comes in. Reflecting and evaluating alternative choices brings confidence back into the personal finance budget process.
Confidence: Why Negative People are so Destructive
Negative people are destructive because they can suck out the enjoyment of life from all the people around them. These people suffer from afflictive emotions, they become jealous, angry, fearful. They are critical, condescending and demeaning. These people are the opposite of what they seem because they are not at all confident, and project their toxicity as a protection against being touched by the people around them.
In seeking to build confidence as a skill, these people need to be avoided, or managed because they will do everything to precipitate doubt in those around them
Confidence: Strategies to overcome Doubt
The secrets to overcoming doubt, are to become confident in taking action and making decisions with personal finance. By moving away from self consciousness, by deliberately tuning out, focussing on something else, concentrating on financial goal setting, budgeting and forecasting, people can grow confidence because they can see a future to pursue, which takes attention away from self ? building confidence.
Another way to overcome doubt is to picture the situation as a movie in the mind. Then make it black and white, then dim the picture before finally moving backwards as if leaving a cinema, so the image gets smaller and distant. Finally, positive thought and positive action both dispel doubts ? so doing something active, and surrounding yourself with positive people works too.
Confidence: The difference between a Public victory and a Private victory.
In growing the skill of confidence, it is necessary to experience both private victories and public victories. Private victories are where outcomes are focussed on the personal results of being proactive, thinking about the end game before starting, and then choosing the first steps to take. In matters of personal finance planning, it is important to work with a personal finance spreadsheet, or a family budget worksheet.
Better still to subscribe to a personal finance budget software, preferably online for ease of use. The outcome is to be clear and precise about the budget decisions to be taken. Public victories are where attention turns to the outside world, where it is important to see the win for both sides, to understand first the consequences of spending money, and then to involve the family or those around you in a team effort to curtail wasteful spending.
Personal finance online software allows for this behavioural victory, the growth of confidence in managing money and in forming new personal finance budgets.

Article by My Franchise Law
Due to the recent economic downturn, many people have begun taking their financial matters into their own hands. With long term job security becoming a thing of the past, many people are turning toward small business ownership to declare their financial independence. Buying into a franchise is one way that people are setting their plans into motion. The risks and rewards are great in any new business venture, but first thing, how are these people getting started? The first thing you need to get squared away is financing, but how? There are actually many options to secure financing for a new franchise and it will be up to you to decide which fits your situation.
Once you have researched franchises that you are interested in and made a decision on which you would like to invest in, you need to decide how you will pay your start-up costs. The Small Business Administration, a branch of the US government, can help you find grants and venture capital but they do not offer loans to cover all costs. You can present your business plan to your personal bank, but recent events have caused banks to tighten lending restrictions, especially with things like small businesses. In fact, it?s likely that to secure a business loan through your personal bank you would need nearly one-hundred percent collateralization. You may also talk with your franchisor about a start-up loan, or liquidate your own personal assets. In recent years, the most popular ways to acquire funding for buying into a franchise is to either borrow from your existing 401(k) plan, or to take advantage of a government ?loop-hole? called ROBS, or Rollovers as Business start-ups, which involves transferring your current 401(k) or IRA into your new business to be used as start-up cash.
Borrowing money from your 401(k) plan is a great way to finance your new business plans. You can borrow up to ,000 or 50% of your total savings, whichever is less. If that doesn?t seem like enough capital, this idea can be combined with government grants, personal assets, or venture capital loans. Keep in mind that you will have to make regular re-payments to your plan, along with reasonable interest, until the loan is fully repaid. You would need to contact your 401(k) plan administrator to find out if you qualify for this route.Hiring an experienced and knowledgeable franchise attorney is always a great idea, but if you plan to roll your current 401(k) or IRA saving plans into money to start your business it is absolutely essential. Basically, you can access all of your retirement money and invest it into your business, tax and penalty free. How does this work? Basically, your franchise attorney will set up a shell corporation in your name, establish a qualified retirement account in the name of your new corporation, move the money in your old 401(k) or IRA into the new one and you will invest the money from the retirement account in the stock of your franchise business, giving you the cash to start your business. Because you are transferring funds from one retirement account to another, you will not have to pay any taxes or penalties for cashing in your plan before the age of 59 ?. Using this method you are free to begin drawing a salary immediately, and you are also free to take any left over money in the new retirement account and invest in any variety of things, such as other businesses and real estate. You have much more control about how your future is being invested.
The ROBS method is a controversial topic in business financing these days. I cannot stress enough how important it is to have an experienced franchise attorney with you every step of the way. Because the ROBS method creates a tax shelter, these transactions come under heavy scrutiny by the IRS. You will need professional assistance to ensure that your new corporation and retirement account follow all federal guidelines to the exact letter. Borrowing from your 401(k) is less legally complex, but you may be subject to penalties and large fees if you fall behind on your re-payments. Going through the Small Business Association, or through personal lenders may not net you enough cash for the full start-up. In any case, it?s vitally important to understand the risks and potential rewards involved with these options. Your future business success depends on how carefully you weigh your options.

If you are over 55 and love to travel, then you may be getting tired of the usual holiday and tour packages you take for your vacations.? I have some good news for you ? There are many alternatives to the more traditional over 55 holidays ? that is fully inclusive touring and independent touring.? ??Check out our great ideas for seniors travel that are no longer the domain of the younger generations. Here are four interesting styles of holiday or vacation you may want to consider when planning your next trip.
?
#1 ? Go Backpacking!
It?s not just for youngsters anymore ? backpacking can be done by anyone, no matter what their age is! It?s a great way to see the world on your own and with others. Not to mention the freedom of being able to make decisions about where and when you will go somewhere at your own leisure.
?
There?s a certain allure about living out of a suitcase and sleeping at hostels and bed-and-breakfasts, and more and more travelers over 55 are discovering it. Backpacking is a great way to visit new locations around the world, meet the locals, and get a good dose of the local culture.? You get a true sense of immersion.
?
What?s more, backpacking accommodation has improved greatly since you may have traveled the world this way in the ?60s and ?70s.? It is not uncommon for a hostel or backpacker accommodation to offer double and single rooms with full bathroom facilities in the centre of town.?? You will be amazed at the value once you start researching this type of style and accommodation.
?
#2 ? Volunteer!
These days, you also have the option of going on volunteer vacations. By volunteering in another country, you get to see new places AND serve a worthy cause at the same time. This is obviously a great vacation option for travelers who would like to give their time to a worthy charity or cause in another country.? More and more retirees are including voluntourism as a major part of over 55 holidays.
?
Many countries offer special VISA?s for foreigners who would like to spend long periods of time doing volunteer work, which include organic farming, conservation, and the teaching of English as a second language. If you have certain skills that are in demand in a country you?ve always wanted to visit, then this might be the vacation for you!
#3 ? Try Home Exchange Travel!
Another quirky, but increasingly popular way of vacationing is home exchange travel. In home exchange travel, you swap homes with someone who lives in the country you want to visit, so you get to experience each other?s countries from the comforts of each other?s homes!
?
Obviously, living in a real house has many advantages over a hotel room. It?s cheaper, it?s more comfortable, and it?s easier to experience the culture and meet the people when you?re part of a real local community.
?
Perhaps the only disadvantage to home exchange travel is the challenge of finding a partner, and then negotiating the terms for the home exchange vacation. Once you find a suitable partner who?s easy to work with, though, you can be well on your way to an interesting vacation indeed!
?
#4 ? Take A Road Trip!
Finally, few things can beat the freedom of throwing all your possessions in the care, hooking up an RV or trailer and then hitting the road for a road trip vacation. When road-tripping, you can go wherever you want by land ? and you don?t have to bring your luggage around by hand wherever you go!? This trip style is becoming more and more popular as an over 55 holiday.
?
Feel like staying in this quaint little town an extra night? No problem. Not comfortable sleeping in hotels? No problem. Want to reach areas that public transport can?t reach? No problem ? just fill up the gas tank and get moving!

In British law, a "superinjunction" is a gag order on the press that extends even to reporting on the fact that there is a gag order on the press. In U.K. courts, these superinjunctions are apparently handed out like popcorn on behalf of any strutting boob with enough pounds sterling or screen time to get the judge's attention. This can hardly be surprising for a country whose libel laws are so biased that it has given birth to "libel tourism."
Now, the Twitterverse has no such law. I think you can figure out what happened next. Although newspapers have been fighting against superinjunctions for some time, with one, the Sun, even kicking at the boundaries, one Twitter user just up and pegged it right in the gear.
An anonymous user created a Twitter account, @superinjunction, with the apparent purpose of posting six tweets about the subjects of various injunctions; including actors, a soccer player and a chef.
Now, according to Forbes, the Twitter scoop is "forcing British lawmakers to think about whether such a thing is still feasible in the age of social media, and if it is, how to enforce it."
What the tweets have done, I think, is given the British press a legal pretext for reporting on the injunctions. They are, the logic goes, not reporting on the material the injunction covered, but on the fact of the injunction being blown.
The first news organization to take this tack is Glasgow's Sunday Herald. They've put a photo of the soccer player, Ryan Giggs, on the front page of their newspaper with a twee black bar over his eyes. It snowballed from there.
The article, an indictment of the superinjunction system and its hypocrisies, attracted enough traffic to crash the Herald's site. (It's up now.)
Giggs is pursuing a suit to force disclosure of the Twitter account holder's name. (He tried to press the suit anonymously but was found out, which seems to be a theme with him.)
Whether the reality of social media will force a change in British law is certainly beyond me. I feel confident, however, in saying that people, like it or not and regardless of the law, will continue to use social media tools like Twitter to tell tales out of school.

Everything in nature evolves. Life was once a single-celled organism. In fact, for most of the past four billion years, life on Earth consisted of the microorganism and nothing more. After bacteria, algae, and fungi formed, evolution leaped forward, manifesting as the dinosaur which prospered for about 165 million years. The reptiles, turtles, and birds of today are all that?s left from the Dinosaur Age.
This primitive reptilian brain or basal ganglia still remains as one-third of our triune human brain today. Like that of a crocodile, it has only two polarized responses; on and off. It is this reactive survival mechanism that is designed to protect all animals from potential danger. This marked the formation of the brain?s simple polarity that is still accessed today by the ego.
The next major mutation on the Earth occurred when life created mammals. This mammalian or limbic brain, formed itself over the reptilian brain. Instead of just two responses, now the animal can react with a slight degree of variance. In addition to being just on or off, it can be slightly on, halfway on, three-fourths on, or all the way on.
Millions of years later, life transformed yet again, manifesting a third brain called the neocortex around 250,000 years ago when modern homo sapiens suddenly appeared out of nowhere from a common ?Eve? grandmother. It was not until the formation of the neocortex that human?s were able to make a choice whether to react or not. Self Transcendence Life Coaching can help you become conscious of your egoic mind so that you can access your neocortex 100% of the time and empower your free will.
The current evolutionary stage of the human brain bestows us with the ability to think, reason, and calculate mental operations in a split second that would rival the processing speed of a million desktop computers all working in unison. But, just because we have evolved into this ?super intelligent species? that has figured out how to split the tiny atom, clone a wooly sheep, propel ourselves to the Moon and back, and watch music videos on our hand-held iPods, it doesn?t necessarily mean that we?re a huge success. Contrarily, I would say that as a species, we?ve allowed our intellectual, material, and physical accomplishments to go straight to our collective head.
The current human species currently allows over a billion of its own people to live below the poverty level. It also allows for millions of its own people to die violently in perpetual wars. I believe that the success of a human species should be directly related to its ability to get along with one another in a cooperative state of peace and harmony. Metaphorically speaking, the ego has imprisoned humanity in its own mind and thrown away the key. It?s been able to do this successfully because people so easily over-identify with their ego?s emotionally reactive state that is intrinsic to the body?s survival mechanism. This fight-or-flight response is rooted in the primal fear of death found in all animals. But we don?t need to feel fear anymore to survive. Our species has already evolved past this point. You don?t need to feel fear to know you shouldn?t walk into oncoming traffic, just some common sense. Self Transcendence Life Coaching focuses on teaching you how to identify your own fears so that they can be addressed and transcended.
The fear that we are referring to here is a psychological fear, not a ?healthy fear? that keeps us alive in life-threatening situations. But unless you?re stationed at the front line of a battlefield every day, you probably don?t need to be accessing this physiological fear of survival. Yet, most of humanity continues to be arrested in this biochemical-inducing state of fear that stems from the reptilian brain?s ?on? or ?off? response. Where?s the free will in this kind of life?
Most humans live out their lives oblivious to the truth that they?re perpetually causing psychic and physiological disharmony to themselves and to others. This physical harm manifests as anger, stress, anxiety, nervous tension, worry, depression, paranoia, phobias, panic attacks, and physical disease. It is this ceaseless psychological state of ?impending doom? that ultimately is rooted in the primal fear of death.
An expert Self Transcendence Life Coach can teach you how to initiate a shift in egoic consciousness, empowering you to dissolve your primitive, psychological fears, and stop reacting daily dramas and challenges. When you learn to do access your neocortex 100% of the time, you will find that the ego will no longer be your master, but your servant. And I think you?ll find this new relationship to be much more peaceful and a lot less stressful.

The founders of B.-d. Farms Paris Creek are anything but your usual dairy farmers. The husband and wife team emigrated from Germany in 1988 in search of literally greener pastures. Both were professionals in their own right, Helmut Spranz held down a stable office job as a manager for the government that he viewed ?as a safe and secure ??for-ever-and-ever job?,? says the other half of the B.-d Farm Paris Creek team Ulli Spranz, but notes that it was ?boring and stagnant.? Ulli herself was a professional graphic designer. ?My family wanted me to become a doctor, but I am very artistic and a very practical orientated person, who loves to develop new things and I have always been fascinated by advertisements and the art of marketing. So I became a graphic designer by profession.? When they decided that they wanted to start a family they reassessed their professional lives and came upon the conclusion that they wanted their family to grow up in a more naturalistic setting than the city that they were living in.
Ulli says that it was ?the natural conclusion that they become farmers.? Such a large leap would not be natural to just anyone, but they forged ahead with their plan. ?Helmut studied agriculture and at the same time I spent as much time as possible gaining, practical experience on various farms, horticulture, viticulture and dairies,? says Ulli. ?This included time in Switzerland learning to make cheese. On a holiday visit in Australia in 1983, where we spent 3 month travelling, we decided that once finished with our studies in agriculture, we were going to set up a project in Australia where we wanted to show that it is possible to set up a financially viable business based on primary production value adding to the raw material, and also based on a non-chemical, non-polluting approach.? Once they had arrived they set about identifying a need that their newly gained experience and knowledge could be used.
?We identified that we needed a farming style where we would have a regular, monthly income,? says Ulli and saw such an opportunity in the dairy industry. ?Being ?foodies? and growing up with high quality organic food in a culture where ?home-made? was not just a fashion, but very much a day-to-day normal practice, cheese production became the ultimate goal.? They found the land that seemed to have been set aside for them just for their purposes in Paris Creek in South Australia. The land?s previous owners had maintained the 170 acres without using harsh chemicals or pesticides, so the Spranz?s conversion to a biodynamic farming business was made that much easier.? ?Paris Creek was the location, originating from Parish?s Creek. The Parish Family were the first settlers here, and over time it turned into Paris Creek. This was long before we came. B.-d. Farm Paris Creek basically means ?the biodynamic farm at Paris Creek?. You can sense the German translation in here!? She jokes.
Everything that they had learned and lived told them that they had to do something different to become an appealing and viable business, and apply some of their European taste to the products they developed. Organic processes and products have been a major focus from the get go, their activities have been often been imitated, but B.-d. Farm Paris Creek has maintained its pioneering spirit. What has separated them from the flock is that they have attempted to keep their range of products as natural as possible.
Keeping it natural
?Our raw product ? milk ? is left as natural as possible. In this B.-d. Farm Paris Creek avoids ?unnecessary? processing such as homogenization and UHT treatment in order to keep it as close as possible to its original stage. On organic farms we avoid artificial fertilisers, pesticides or fungicides and we avoid antibiotics and hormones for the animals. This makes the milk a better product for chemically sensitive consumers, and consumers who want to avoid ?hidden additives? ? says Ulli. ?She also says that the feedback that they have received has indicated that many of their lactose intolerant consumers can actually tolerate their milk based products. Ulli says that this is because of the natural state that their products maintain.
?B.-d. Farm Paris Creek does not use any artificial ingredients,? she says. ?We use all certified organic or biodynamic ingredients. Our range of original yogurts is made with milk and cultures only, no thickeners or stabilizers are used and no sugar or artificial sweeteners are added to the? yogurt. This makes that range of products very unique and we are the only company in Australia processing this way. However, we also provide a range of more mainstream yogurts, entirely made from certified organic or biodynamic ingredients as well, but with a creamy, thick consistency. Our cheeses are made to resemble European Semi Hard and French Soft cheeses. The recipes have been developed by European specialty cheese makers.?
Ulli says that the biodynamic practices provide for a higher nutritional value in food products. For their dairy products this means that the calcium content generally is higher than that of conventionally produced milk. ?Research? conducted by the Danish Institute? of Agricultural Research showed organic milk has 50% higher levels of vitamin E, 75% higher levels of beta carotene which is converted to vitamin A in the body, higher levels of omega 3 essential fatty acids, which are believed to help provide protection from coronary heart disease and two to three times higher in the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthine. This generally helps to beat infections.?
Maintaining non-genetically altered ingredients, and avoiding artificial flavours and colours and other artificial ingredients,? is of advantage when expanding the export side for the business and entering new countries that often have regulations that limit the import of modified products in any form. In Australia B.-d. Farm Paris Creek exports to every state, and most IGA?s, health food and organic stores making sure to pick up their products. Woolworth?s and Coles carry their products in South Australia, and some across some state and territorial borders.
Small farm, big reach
?B.-d. Farm Paris Creek are present in almost all Woolworths, Coles, IGA?s and Health Food Stores in SA and we are just about setting up business with the Independents through Metcash Australia wide. Our products are also available in Health Food Stores and for food service Australia wide. Some cheese products are also available Australia wide in Woolworths, such as our European Style Cottage Cheese, which is called Quark and our French Soft Cheese Nuage Blanc, both Gold Medall Winners at the Dairy Industry Awards Competition DIAA. We also export to Singapore, Hong Kong and Fiji,? says Ulli.
Ulli thinks that some of the success that they have garnered has been in part due to the fact that many consumers are becoming more educated about the products that they are consuming. ?In my opinion the dairy industry is going in opposite directions. There is an urge to produce cheaper milk in order to suit the supermarkets? main stream demands,? she says. In order to achieve a cheaper price there is the possibility to dilute the natural product, using powdered or milk substitutes and also to UHT treat the milk, that can also provide for longer lasting products. ?The alternative is a wholesome milk product, derived from naturally grazing cows. A product that is carefully treated, not diluted or reconstituted, but sold in its natural stage to retain the goodness of real milk, as nature intended,? she says.
This trend also applies to other dairy products such as yogurts, which B.-d. Farm Paris Creek has some very strong offerings of its own. ?The consumer can choose between creamy, full bodied products, but these potentially can be full of sweeteners, powders and stabilizers,? she says. Again the other choice, and the one that Ulli hopes the smart consumer will make, are natural products without the artificial additives. ?In the end it?s the consumer?s choice what they decide to buy.? It is very important that the consumer makes an educated choice based on facts and not based on the biggest promotional budget,? she says.
This split also manifests itself within some of the other challenges that the dairy industry as a whole is facing. Unlike the United States where factory farming and over production of milk products are fairly common, Australia has a more protectionist view of the industry. ?The world of dairy is constantly challenging,? says Ulli.
Up for the challenge
?Dealing in today?s market situation is not easy. There are the major supermarkets as well as the growing market with the independent supermarkets and the smaller chains, the health food markets as well as consumers that prefer products directly from the producers at the fresh food markets.? It is important to be able to survive in between these markets, as our business is to get the products to the consumers, regardless where the consumers are. I believe that B.-d. Farm Paris Creek is doing a very good job balancing these markets and making sure that there are no favours or disadvantages.? She says that B.-d. Farm has adapted its business strategy that does not attempt to compete directly with other farmers in the market, but instead looks to ?fill in the gaps? with their product offering. She also relates that some competitors do not take this same spirit, and instead look at ways to either compete directly with them or in one case, spread disinformation about their operations and future.
?One competitor?s sales reps went door knocking and telling consumers B.-d. Farm Paris Creek would be a Singapore owned company,? she relates. ?Another challenge is to match milk supply with demand for the products. To produce a genuine organic product, we want to stay away from convenient shelf life stabilizers and shelf extending processing methods, as they would interfere with the integrity of the ?organic? expectation of purity and support for a healthy diet. However, as we support our local suppliers in their initiative to supply us with premium certified milk, B.-d. Farm Paris Creek seem is able to manage this situation well.?
Leveraging the social
One of the ways that they have met the threat of this and larger companies with large marketing dollars to spend is their continued leveraging of social media. ?Social media plays a pivotal role in terms of customer feedback and brand identity,? she says. Not only does it help them brand their image and distribute information on their products but it also provides direct feedback from their customers. ?It is uncomplicated and provides important feedback for both sides.? Transparency and direct involvement are the main drivers for our fans and consumers to participate in our social network.? Overall it is a great way to nurture our relationship with loyal customers and to enable them to be part of B.-d. Farm Paris Creek?s continuous success and further development.?
The future
B.-d Farm Paris Creek has enjoyed substantial growth, especially over the past 10 years. Ulli Spranz says that this current period, and five years from now, will be a time of consolidation and ?settling down?.
?We anticipate to grow our business another 20 % over the next 5 years, which really means that we are slowing down. It is not easy to digest such an enormous growth that we have had in the past 10 years and so it is important to settle down and ensure the long term good health of the business,? she says. This slow down of their growth will allow them to refocus on maintaining the quality and excellence that their customers have come to expect from the dairy producers. ?The cheeses that we produce have been awarded Gold awards over the past 2 years,? she says, showing why their focus on quality assurance is so important to the company.
?Over the years we have been awarded numerous awards. Product awards give us an independent feedback and acknowledgement for our products,? says Ulli, not that the judges of these competitions are not made aware of the special processes that they use to make their wares, and the Spranz?s have the product speak for itself. ?So, if they award us gold, silver or a champion award, we know that our products will be successful in the market. So far, all of our products have been awarded at least silver in one of the Dairy Industry Awards.? B.-d. Farm Paris Creek has also received awards for the manner in which they have built and managed the company, and Ulli herself has been awarded several business awards over the course of the company?s history, and in 2010 was awarded Rural Women of the Year in Southern Australia.

BATON ROUGE ? It was one up and one down this week for Rep. James Armes, D-Leesville.
Armes got the House to go along 56-35 with a bill that gives local school boards in some parishes authority to hire immediate family members to provide special education services.
The legislation moves to the Senate.
Rural areas are having a difficult time finding teachers in those fields, Armes said. His legislation was amended to apply only to those parishes with a population of less than 60,000.
The exception being granted to the state code of ethics applies to the nepotism provision. It would also allow boards to hire immediate family members of school superintendents in those parishes.
Rep. Chuck Kleckley, R-Lake Charles, was the only member of the Southwest Louisiana House delegation to vote against the legislation.
Armes couldn?t convince the House to go along with a second bill that would make it possible for young offenders (18 years old and under) sentenced to life to become eligible for parole after serving 35 years.
The legislation had the support of district attorneys, he said.
Aggravated rape and aggravated kidnapping were two crimes Armes mentioned during debate. It wouldn?t apply to people sentenced to life for firstor second-degree murder.
Parole wouldn?t have been automatic; offenders would have needed good records and no write-ups and governors would have to sign off on the parole, Armes said.
The House rejected the bill 57-39.
Southwest Louisiana representatives voting against the bill were Mike Danahay, D-Sulphur; Brett Geymann, R-Moss Bluff; Rep. Bob Hensgens, R-Abbeville and Chuck Kleckley, R-Lake Charles. Voting for the bill were Armes; A.B. Franklin, D-Lake Charles; Johnny Guinn, R-Jennings; Dorothy Sue Hill, D-Dry Creek and Frank Howard, R-Many.
Hensgens is a new House member from District 47. He represents Vermilion and Cameron parishes and replaced Jonathan Perry, R-Kaplan, who was elected to the state Senate in a special election.
The House voted 90-0 for a bill by Hill that makes it possible for a state income taxpayer to donate a portion of his or her tax refund or other money to the Louisiana Food Bank Association.
The bill moves to the Senate.
The legislation also establishes a special escrow fund in the state treasury for the association to be administered by the state treasurer. The funds would be transferred to the association every 60 days.
The House Ways and Means Committee could request a report from the association regarding its operations and finances.
