Is your survival worth the death of everyone else?
That's the conundrum the X-Men face in X-Men: Giant Size #1, where a threat from the X-Men's past threatens to destroy their future!
Writer Christopher Yost sets up his next storyline with this one-shot, and what we've seen is interesting enough. Here he introduces the Evolutionaries, an alien race whose mission is to ensure the survival of the most powerful races, even if it means the extinction of everybody else. Good news for mutankind, because they're the apple of the Evolutionaries' eyes. Bad for everyone else who isn't a mutant. But of course, being the superhero team known as the X-Men, this kind of thinking mustn't stand. Make no mistake, the Evolutionaries are nothing to scoff at. These guys are frighteningly powerful, and have been shown to decimate races all over the globe simultaneously with just a thought!
But apparently, this isn't the first time the Evolutionaries have come knocking on the X-Men's door, so Yost brings us back the the early years of the very first X-Men (Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman and Angel), who have crossed paths with the Evolutionaries way back then. It's fun seeing the first class again, and we get some interesting interaction between them all, giving readers a glimpse of their family dynamic. Good stuff.
Speaking of good stuff, the art here is amazing. Artists Paco Medina and Dalibor Talijic pull out all the stops, delivering page after page of dynamic action and art, whether in the far-flung past or the pressing present. Talijic in particular does a great job rendering the X-Men's past, and he's going on my list of artsts to watch. Props must also be given to the Evolutionaries' design. They really look intimidating and badass, worthy of beings who are about to face off against foes as uncanny as the X-Men!
X-Men: Giant-Size #1 weighs in at almost $5, but surprisingly, it's worth every penny. Great action, great character moments, and a perfect jumping-on point for new readers. If you're unsure on where to start with the X-Men, you could do no worse than picking this book up.

I may go back and pick this one up. I didn't know it was written by Yost. The man writes pure entertainment. I love his Fantastic Four, Wolverine and the X-Men and Avengers cartoon TV show work, too.

Me too, though I'm about six months behind on X-Books I really hope once I catch up it will worth reading. Though Generation Hope has been surprisingly good the last few issues.
