Mitt Should Have Backed Away From Mandate

Actually, the emerging pundit CW was that Romney couldn?t afford to back away from Romneycare, because he already had too many flip-flops to his name, and that his reputation as ?multiple-choice Mitt? (or ?Romney, the dancing fraud,? in Daniel Larison?s memorable phrase) would be cemented by yet another tergiversation. But I wonder if there wasn?t a needle to be threaded here. Romney didn?t have to say the whole Massachusetts bill was a mistake: He could separated it into its component parts, defended the insurance expansion and the exchanges, described that as a model for national reform, and just backed away from the mandate, calling it an experiment that didn?t work out.
