Irony: IRS employees union wants no part of ObamaCare

posted at 12:01 pm on July 26, 2013 by Bruce McQuain

The simple irony is fairly obvious, but you need to also appreciate the more profound irony ? the IRS is ObamaCare?s enforcement arm. ?Remember those 16,000 new IRS agents that are going to make sure you comply with the law? ?Well, it seems they?ll only pleased to do that if they are exempt from the ACA:

IRS employees have a prominent role in Obamacare, but their union wants no part of the law.

National Treasury Employees Union officials are urging members to write their congressional representatives in opposition to receiving coverage through President Obama?s health care law.

The union leaders are providing?members with a form letter to send to the congressmen that says ?I am very concerned about legislation that has been introduced by Congressman Dave Camp to push federal employees out of the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program and into the insurance exchanges established under the Affordable Care Act.?

The NTEU represents 150,000 federal employees overall, including most of the nearly 100,000 IRS workers.

This is the agency that will be collecting data on you and, if you?re not in compliance, levying the penalties and collecting them. ?But under ObamaCare, they have the misfortune of having a ?Cadillac plan?. ?Currently their health care insurance is provided through the?Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, the same program which covers members of Congress. ?Naturally Congress has exempted themselves from the law.

You?ll no doubt remember that even when Nancy Pelosi said that they?d have to pass the legislation to find out what was in the legislation, unions doggedly stood behind its passage and gave it their support, even while critics correctly outlined the consequences of doing so. ?And now, as Obama?s preacher of 20 years would say, the ?chickens are coming home to roost?. ?In a scathing letter to Democrat leaders in Congress earlier this month, the Teamsters ? another union that backed the passage of the law ? laid out the cold, hard truth:

When you and the President sought our support for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), you pledged that if we?liked the health plans we have now, we could keep them. Sadly, that promise is under threat. Right now, unless?you and the Obama Administration enact an equitable fix, the ACA will shatter not only our hard-earned health?benefits, but destroy the foundation of the 40 hour work week that is the backbone of the American middle class.

Obama trotted out an economic plan a few days ago he claimed was aimed at helping the middle class. And he enjoined the Republicans to help him do that. ?Given the Teamsters very correct take on the ACA and it?s effect on hiring and jobs, it would seem that in fact the best thing both parties could do to help the middle class is to defund or repeal this travesty of a law.

As Legal Insurrection points out:

It never really made sense to destroy a system that was satisfactory to the majority (253.4 million) to accommodate a mere fraction of that (10-30 million, depending on sources) ?

It never made sense unless you had another ultimate goal in mind, that?s for sure. ?But here we are ? saddled with an intrusive and unworkable law that is going to destroy the medical insurance industry as we know it, drive up costs and ultimately fail. ?If that wasn?t so serious, you could actually enjoy the delicious irony of the IRS union?s rejection of the very law they?re pledged to uphold and enforce.
